10 mpg....of OIL!!!
Hi all,
My discovery 3 has started consuming fantastic amounts of oil. It's pushing oil past the pcv/ breather and straight into the air intake. The car is surging too, and it's in danger of running away burning its oil. Needless to say, no plans to use it for the Paris Dakaar anytime soon...
So it looks like there is too much crankcase pressure. If I take the filler cap off it splurts oil out, but only under revs, at idle it's fine.
It idles and sounds fine when driving no misfire or anything.
This has suddenly happened. It's not like it's got worse and worse, so it's not steady piston ring wearing. Car has done 100,000
Anyone got any ideas. Or is it as plain as what i don't want to hear - a hole in a piston

The geniuses will be here soon, but I would start with compression test depending on the sound of the engine could also be worth checking the turbo , good luck

Should be a turbo or a injector copper seal or a blocked crankcase vent or ......Discovery 5 tdv6 HSE Corris Gray Outback Engineering Limited Edition

yeah - thanks for the reply - good shout! Turbo has actually been replaced with a recon, as that was already suspected as the prime reason for the problem.
Cheers

Thanks Dgardel...
copper injector seal - I'll check that..
...or yes as you elude to .. hole in the piston.
Stupid Pugeot POS engine.
Anyone else got any suggestions before this car goes to the breakers, representing a loss of 10k!
Cheers

before you take it to the scrap yard
behind the oil filter is the breather system. (black plastic thing)
Might be worth ripping that out (it almost impossible to remove without brute force)
Refit oil filter.
And start the engine.
See where the pressure is coming from. Someone might be able to give you clues then.
There are 2 pipes from the rear of the engine (1 from turbo)
2 holes in the block.

If the car does need to go to the breakers you can always strip everything out you can & flog the parts, then get rid of what's left via a recycler. Even if you price things to sell you'd be surprised how much value there is in the bits. Plus it's very therapeutic reducing the car down to a pile of parts and bodyshell on wheels.
therapeutic ? let's not jump from oil leak to scrappage without a bit more of a fight !

Agreed, but if it comes to that it'll be a great way of passing the time.
And my sage advise re stripping? All connectors will come apart eventually. For me it was just after I cut the cables.

I would love to break it and flog it, but it would probably end my marriage having a half eaten disco on the drive for 6 months!
It's the volume of oil I can't get my head round... 5 litres of oil in 10 miles pumped into the intercooler. We have ripped out the pcv and checked it's operation, but even if this was playing up I wouldnt expect a failure on that degree. Or am I wrong there? Can the breather fail to this degree...
Has anyone come across this? Is this behavior compliant with a failed piston? Remember, it runs and sounds absolutely fine. You'd never know- not even any ecu error codes...
Cheers

I was lucky in some ways, it happened 2,300 miles from home and was constrained by time. I only had about 8 hours to strip her, and space, had to get all my camping gear, the stripped stuff and me in the D4 for the 4 day drive home with my knees pressed into the dash.

Irrelevant to the topic but just had to say 'best colour'. 2014 MY Discovery XS Indus Silver. Sadly gone. Second last LR of forty eight years continuous ownership.
... 5 litres of oil in 10 miles pumped into the intercooler.
ok ... i'm into guessing here but if it's in the intercooler then surely Turbo is suspect ? I know you said it's been swapped but maybe replacement is faulty ? or the oil feed to it is unchanged and is the problem ??

As above. If it’s that much oil in the inter cooler it has to be easy to find where it’s coming from. Take the outlet off the turbo and see if the turbo is blowing the oil. Be very careful of an engine runaway.

What's the pcv ?
If you suspect the turbo.
Remove the small plastic guard in the drivers wheel arch (at front) 4 plastic clips
Get an old bucket and tray.
Undo the intercooler hose.
Even a good turbo will leak a little out of here.
If its what you suspect it will pour out.
Position the rubber hose away from dirt.
If you have suitable newspaper/tray on the drivers side all under the engine, start the car.
Rev it slightly, and see if oil es everywhere and makes a right mess.
Even a good turbo will spray a little oil initially
