12 volt sockets

Just got D4.
I wish to enable 12 volt sockets to be live with ignition off.
Does the Relay removal and new wire fix described here
http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic39732.html
work on a D4?

Why? Big risk of inadvertently flattening the battery, I think.

Yes, aware of that, willing to run with it.

I marshal on rallies etc. need 12 volt feed for radio while stationary for 2 - 3 hours.

I have had 2 or 3 scares in the D3, having sat with ignition in "auxiliary". As has been said on here, there are so many power drains on a Disco the battery can be flattened by literally doing nothing for 2 or 3 hours.

The only alternative that I am aware of is "croc clips" to the battery. Not very practical if you do need to move.

ISTR that there is a permanent live on the 12s socket. Pins 3 and 4 ? Same pins used (?) for charging battery.

Welcome to the site Thumbs Up

Very easy to get the sockets working all the time

Drop down the lower glove box to reveal the fuse box

Remove this relay from fuse box

Put in a link wire ..like this

You will then have permenant power to all 3 aux sockets ( not ciggy lighter ...this still requires ignition on position 1 ) . The 3 sockets are still protected by there original fuses .

I have a GPS speed camera connected to 12v and an iphone charger ..these are on all the time and i can leave my car at the airport for 2 weeks with no ill effects .

Biggest worry is if you leave the ignition on ..this then activates alot of the cars electrics ..this is were people get into trouble ...although i can quite happely leave my car ignition on position 2 for a good 3 hour without any worries .

Radio on for a lot less than 2 to 3 hours will flaten battery below what is needed for a startup.

I think he's talking about a CB radio - lot less drain. I can run mine overnight.

Cheers,

I had spotted that link but wasn't sure about D4 relevance so just opted to have my MSA radio hardmounted & wired to a permenant feed by a profressional auto electrician I know......

He still won't talk to me as it took him more than two hours to find a suitable feed. The radio is mounted under & to the right of the steering wheel, I get the impression he spent a long time in very uncomfortable positions in the footwell!!!

I spend all day at rallies with radio on & engine off and have never had a problem starting the engine when it was time to go home.
