Well believe it or not, some people follow these things like robots - all over the world. Including the US.

This would be a good one for us though Thumbs Up

Wow. That's pretty bad. Well, hopefully with the update DVD, errors such as those may be fixed. Everyone could use a map update sometime it seems.

No... everybody needs to apply common sense when using a sta nav.

People never seemed to drive into rivers or up un-drivable lanes when they used a paper map. Just because its electronic doesn't mean its infallible.

I couldn't agree more. Even when you're in a Land Rover, it's tough to keep that in mind... that's a joke.

I agree that it would be a copyright issue and considering people misuse my stuff sometimes, I don't condone it either. I checked the navteq website, which bumped me to lrna and the dvd is only $200 usd - if a person can afford a new land rover, they can pay the piper for the new nav info.... if they want to alter it, well, that's a private issue not unlike making a mixed cd of all your favorites maybe.

Those are funny satnav into the badlands bbc news clips - at what point does a person begin to wonder , "hmmm, this seems a bit odd.." ? is it when the water is coming over the window or when the car is bottoming out on the roughest road they've ever driven on?

people can be pretty silly when they leave the brain off during a drive.

Why is that? There certainly aren't any regulations against it? I've also had it working in Mini's, Acuras, Porsche, and Cheverolet while moving.

It's not a regulation (otherwise sale of all aftermarket units would have to be forbidden as well), so I'm guessing that some auto manufacturers don't want to assume any potential liability risks in our market. LR / Jaguar is not the only manufacturer to disable on-the-move satnav operation in North America. Toyota / Lexus, Nissan / Infiniti come to mind, but I am sure there are others. BMW and MB should disable theirs though, they are dangerous to use even when standing still. Laughing

the idrive in our 07 wagon is FAR better than the system in the LR3. we took a 3 week road trip after getting the car - it's faster, has more "info" on places, shows up to the minute traffic info, zooms easily and quick, scroll to any other place on the map in seconds, all on the move and all without leaning forward to "touch" the nav screen only to have it hesistate and require continuous input or touch. it also has a nice split screen so you can keep the map up while looking at entertainment choices.

other than the pretty contour lines, the lr3 nav totally sucks.

they couldn't even provide a "night" setting reversing all the colors like many others do.

the best one i've seen yet is not quite on the US market - the new VW touch screen - info based on bmw and detailed maps more like the lr3 version. the old vw map was so bad you lost all rivers and detail zooming out even the slightest bit and it's almost quicker to pull out the paper atlas or a lodging directory.

The Mini one is definitely easier to use then the lR3.

I"m suprised about the places though as they are both (LR and BMW) using Navteq data.

I wish you could get more detail at a higher level then 1/8mile. on my Mini its a 1/4 mile.

Might have to hack the database on the DVD to fix that.

I don't have the satnav in front of me, but I think you can zoom in up to 1/16th of a mile with the LR system? I may be wrong, though. Regarding usability, I'll take the touchscreen of the LR3 with a full keyboard over a "turn - turn - push - turn -turn -turn - push" control such as Mercedes' terrible Comand system on my father's 08 E-350 or the one on my wife's 05 BMW 3-something convertible (not an iDrive though), but I guess it's a matter of preference. I do wish the LR system did integrate with XM traffic info like other newer systems, but for a satnav that's nearly 4 years old I can't complain. Rumor is that we are getting the new Jag XF infotainment interface in 2010, I think.

Sorry, I misspoke. I do agree with the touch screen input vs the dial a letter approach.

In my Mini, i still see all streets at 1/4 mile zoom.
On the LR you can't be higher then 1/8 to still see all the streets.

I find it quite useful for getting around traffic jams, but doesn't work as well at tighter zooms, since you can't tell where the road really goes as it disappears off the screen. Particularly annoying in San Diego since the Canyons tend to orphan a lot of neighborhoods.

So true... so true...

I am planning on getting the 2008 version here shortly. I hope it fixes some other minor annoyances like the Merge not being correct on my old 2004/5 disc, the 125 extension, and a very strange spot at Navajo on the 125 where every single time you drive south on the 125, it jumps to the frontage road, recalculates everything, then waits until you are past fletcher before realizing that maybe you were on the freeway the whole time.
