Sdv6 vs tdv6
Hi guys
I’ve currently got a disco 3 se and I’m looking to upgrade to a disco 4. There seems to be sdv6 and tdv6.
What’s the difference?
Also is post 2012 a better car?
Thanks

if not mistaken TDV 6 is standing for the 2,7 HDI engine with 190 HP whereas the SDVs are coming in 3.0 with 211 HP, beefed up around 256 HP?
I am not sure about post 2012 cars being better. They all break down regardless of MY.
But for sure the 8 speed auto gear box is a big improvement versus the 6 speed 6HP26.Achim

All SDV6 and TDV6 are the same engine if 3.0l. If it’s not a commercial, they both have the same power upto around MY12 when they changed to about 255 from 245 I think.
I think the ones marked as TDV6 generally don’t have dpf. I think it’s more marketing than anything else!
Strange how the new Discovery 5 is now back to TD6!!!

TDV6 generally 245bhp and 6 speed gearbox.
SDV6 generally 256bhp and 8 speed gearbox
But there are exceptions
All New Discovery TDV6 is a single turbo 258bhp, SDV6 is a sequential twin turbo 256bhp.

The SDV6 also has two turbos as opposed to the TDV6 single turbo, and at some point around 2010 on the bearing shells were staked I believe but I cannot find an accurate answer for this. Sadly the 3 Ltrs engine seems to suffer crank failure more often than the 2.7 these failures seem random so you just have to service them properly and hope yours keeps going!
MARKATE got there before me.

All 3.0l have twin turbo regardless of TDV6 or SDV6.
The new disco 5 has single turbo

Still very confusing.
I just got a D4 MY 2011. Build date according to my papers 201103.
LHD
Swedish sold.
According to papers TDV6 with DPF. M in the VIN number.
210 bhp 155kW 6 speed gearbox
Engine seized at 120 000 km. Have now got a used SDV6 from 2015 28 000 miles.
Hope the switch will work.
Confused what has to be used from the original engine. Injectors?
Please advice!

What D4 did it come from? A commercial?
It sounds from your description you had a knackered 210hp 2.7 TDV6 that you’re now trying to put a 3.0l SDV6/TDV6 into?
Having said all of the above, my reference was only to the U.K. market. Not sure if it’s different outside UK or worldwide. Very possibly is!

No no no.
The seized engine is a 3.0 l TDV6 with DPF. And the car is a HSE.
Engine code 306DT.
This is how it came to Sweden.
Maybe it is not what was sold in UK.
So the new used engine should be able to fit even if it is from a newer car.

Hi Paul,
The engine has arrived. It is the one on the pictures I got from Chris.
We will start the work in a couple of weeks.
It is really strange with the confusion on marking of the engines.
And even worse that foreign markets does not seem to be the same as UK.

Some confusing information here, it seems. In an attempt to simplify (applies to the UK):
All D4's have a 3.0 litre twin turbo diesel engine except some very early ones that have the 2.7 litre from the D3, but I believe they were restricted to commercials.
The TDV6 and the SDV6 are the same 3.0 twin turbo engine, although the SDV6 has a few external tweeks and an 8 speed box as opposed to the 6 speed TDV6.
The TDV6 has 245bhp and the SDV6 has 254bhp, the difference being mostly due to the gearbox.
