2 hours with new vehicle and complete loss of power - help !

Only 2 hours after collecting my 05 HSE, leaving friends house in the rain, winding my way along a country road and suddenly almost complete loss of power. The car was just able to crawl up the hill. The error message on the dash said something like 'Vehicle Special mode disengaged' although I may have got that slight wrong.

Turning key back to 0 and then back to start the engine produced nothing - the engine wouldnt start. Parking, switching completely off, key out and then back in - the engine started fine with no errors. Since then no further problems.

Any ideas what caused this ? Are errors logged in the Disco 3, how long do I have to read them and how do I do this ?

Nick

Hi Nick,

Sorry to hear about your problem with your new toy.

Most of those on here that know what the Censored they are talking about are at the Billing LR Show.

However I do know that it will store all error codes until cleared.

Id start with the obvious - battery connections maybe got wet or loose.

Try restarting a couple of times AFTER letting the park light go out so it goes to sleep first.

I hope its nowt big.

Let us know how you get on.

Dave

Whilst I'd like to welcome you to the owners' club, I fear you may also be joining the turbo failure club - see here for depressing details and then have a search for +power +loss +special or similar words.
At least a purchase from a dealer will give you warranty repairs or at worst, return and refund capability.

I hope I'm wrong and it's just a sensor or intercooler hose etc.

EGR valves or turbo are a distinct possibility for loss of power. Get yourself hooked up to diagnostics Thumbs Up

As soon as I saw my sweeping statement i should have said most of the English fraternity.

I beg your indulgence for several reasons;

1. I am an idiot.

2. I am somewhat drunk.

3. I rarely consider what i have said until its after its left my tiny brain. (For example 'I do, Yes I will have another, Get stuffed Officer etc)

I beg forgiveness from the wise NON Billing show folk.

Im off for a lie down.

Oh and Nick if its your Turbo, welcome to the club (CFT) for I too am a member.

Hope it works out.

Dave

mmm... Censored . It was a private purchase but did come with a transferrable warranty so.....hope that covers it. Strange how it then worked fine afterwards.

Any independent LR specialists in the Surrey area who could do the diagnostics?

Ok three parts:

1) loss of power, get a diagnosis try 10forcash from off road essentials- member on here, highly respected on here and just happens to be an Indy ...

2) when you tried to restart, were you in gear ? Obviously if it's an auto it won't start in gear...

3) I am also drinking ....

did you have it in gear when you tried to restart it - did the engine turn over ?

the codes will be stored but a simple shutdown and restart could solve it.

ive had a few occurences in the last 4 years - one where the car went into limp home mode in the first 6 months but never had the problem again - could have been a s/w glitch.

worth getting the codes read though - try "wiggs" or "10ForCash".

dont dispair - even a new EGR valve isnt that expensive. My 06 D3 has just done 120K miles and I seem to be spending a fortune on it at the moment - but it should then be good for another 120K miles so cant complain !!

I've got 10forcash (iain) coming down to me next Wednesday to do a remap; I know he's tight for bookings but is worth dropping him an email as he's in the area. He's very good indeed.

Your nearest main dealer is Hunters, but Whistle.....if you're in warranty though you may want to explore that angle but my experience to date has been not too good.

Guava in Guildford, an independant, have also come recommended, but as I'm a 10forcash man I haven't used them myself.

Thinking back actually I think I probably was still in D when trying to restart so that would explain that one !

Reading through the turbo threads there is mention of the EGR valves however I should be able to dismiss that as they have already been blanked off. Unlike the other cases, I wasn't accelerating hard. I was going about 15mph down a small B road, had stopped to let a car coming the other way pass and then lightly started pulling slowly up the opposite hill - and it died.

10forcash down my way - sounds like I should give him a shout.

Check your light bulbs. Rear brake/side fail and sometimes the element short to earth as they fail and fool the computer and you get an engine fault.

Interesting, I'll check this, thanks. Also possibly of relevance - the car had been sat for an hour in very heavy rain - I wonder if some water has got in somewhere and caused the problem.
