I think I remember someone saying the genuine apple ones were ok
Genuine Apple converter as bought from Apple store so can't be that.

Hmmmmm. So I was just asking my wife the other day if she was sure the converter was from the Apple store and she said no, they didnt have stock at the time and directed her to a shop nearby. The package etc looked exactly the same and as they(Apple) directed her there she thought it was the real thing. I went and bought a new adapter straight from Apple this time and Bob's your Uncle!!!
It works 100%!!! So it is very important to get the actual real Apple product otherwise it just doesn't work.
Thought I will just give closure to this thread, even if it meant I had to eat my own words

Remember that the genuine apple 30pin to lightning converter has a DAC built in as the lightning does not output analogue audio. Best bet is the standard apple £15 adapter rather than a cheaper ebay one. Works with my Merc's I30 pin ipod kit. Interestingly the device ipod controls don't work when plugged into the car, but the phone through the lightning one has full functionality as well as the control through the car kit.
