ahhh but is this from the mpg on the dash or actual, I find the dasdh readout is terrible on the D4, around 3 - 4 MPG above realJoined the BMWX5 45e group

My 2011 November D4 is doing around 26mpg with a mix of motorway, and non-motorway. This is brim-to-brim. The computer reckons another 5mpg. It's useless...!

I have a 13 plate lux and have done 4000 miles this month in it. I'm always on the outside lane keeping up with the traffic (sic) and over those miles from new it has averaged 31 mpg which I think is outstanding given my heavy right foot and the complexities of the 4WD and weight of vehicle! It's certainly better than the 12 mpg I get from my P38!

my 2013 D4 XS is getting 30 or 31 mpg according to the trip meter; and an actual 27.4; 27.3; 26.3; 26.2 during the past 4 fill ups measuring brim to brim and doing the maths.
It would appear from other posts that those reporting more than 27mpg are basing this on optimistic trip computer reading because they don't state otherwise; and that those quoting about 27mpg are measuring brim to brim and doing the maths. It would be interesting to know if anyone has acheived a genuine 28mpg or more.
I have only once exceeded an accurately calculated (brim to brim) 29 MPG.
29.7 MPG on a 187 mile leg of a long trip in November last year when my D3 had done 39K miles; the next tankful was 26.9 MPG.
Overall I have done 25.5 MPG over the last 7.5k miles, using Castrol Acetvo & (of course) adding the qualtity of Castrol Actevo to the quantity of fuel used.
I don't hang around & the car is remapped by BAS.
The MPG on the LCD display often shows in excess of 31 MPG - total B***S**t.

I think you should give posters a little more credit but yes, I currently get more than 28 mpg as a running average on my 2013 D4. The engine is more run in now and the warmer weather helps considerably:
Achieving a real-world 30 mpg+ on a large 4x4 is ok.

The MY13 D4 I used on my Land Rover experience course was 15 mpg on the trip .... wonder what it was for real

I find the computer over-estimates by 3-4 mpg.
If I divide the trip distance since last fill up by amount of litres during that trip and multiply by 4.55 (for gallons)............I get somewhere in range of 24.5 to 26 mpg whereas the computer reads 28 to 31 mpg.
This is for mixed driving (mildly spirited ) suburban and dual carriageway A roads.

I'm not for a moment going to suggest that this is empirical evidence, but here's my tale.
I bought the D4 a fortnight ago and the tank was filled on collection. I know it was; I was there at the time and zeroed all the trip computers.
I have only just put more Diesel in it after the trip computer has implied an average of 34mpg on Trip A while the Auto Trip has regularly reckoned on 33-35mpg on my morning commute and 34-37 (yes... 37! !) on my way home.
I was pleased enough with both of those, remembering that Auto Trip zeroes as soon as the car is started, so Trip A/B are the ones to use for longer fuel consumption comparisons.
As I said, I filled the tank and put the details into RoadTrip (and onto a spreadsheet I keep, 'cos I'm anal like that).
Both tallied with Trip A at 34mpg.
34. Thirty-bloody-four. My classic car struggles to do that, and since I've just gone from a Kia Sorento that rarely chugged over 27mpg, I'm over the moon.

I realise this thread may have run its course but having just found it I thought I should add a comment - I did read somewhere recently (but can't remember where!) that it can be false economy to use the 'supermarket' brand of fuel as opposed to the likes of BP or Shell etc. The article went on to state that vehicles using the 'premium' brands returned a better fuel consumption compared to using the supermarket ones.
And finally, a question for Robbie and Hairy Dan - which fuel apps are you using? I am looking for one to use on my Samsung Android phone but there seems to be so many out there. Can you recommend one please?

There are those who stick to "premium" fuels; I have stuck with Shell for many years, and have proved, to my satisfaction, that there are advantages over supermarket fuels.
A local charity which runs a number of vehicles which were always refuelled at the local supermarket has moved its custom to Shell, as they have had a number of problems which the vehicle supplier put down to supermarket fuel.
Since migrating to Shell - no more problems.
In my case I also add Mineral two-stroke oil to JASO FC specification.
