2014 D4 with stop start, Question?

Friend has a 2014 D4 with SS. He’s getting Low Battery warning messages on the screen from time to time.
He says that the main battery is not that old, and he has charged it fully.
He says that the Stop start is working fine, but still occasionally gets this message, but car seems to start normally.
I’ve not measured his voltage yet.

Will my IId tool be able to reset his battery management system? As I suspect it needs the battery charging up, and a reset, or will he need a multi vehicle iid to do this?

Does the small stop start battery actually start the engine, or does it just keep ancillaries running whilst engine is off? Could this battery be the one that needs changing, as it’s original from 2014.

Help as my car is not stop start, and I’m not clued on the system.

In answer to last part of the question.
The battery more than likely needs changing.
My 2014 version needed changing at about 3.5 yrs old.
So they have done well out of the original.

I understand that this particular year has issues with the hardware and software, took the dealers a while to fix when I had it and they were dealing with it about two and a half years ago!

Don't know if of much use, but here's my recent battery experience on my MY14 D4.

Stop Start was working fine when I got the D4 in May.
However as I don't do much mileage it stopped working - I was taking more out of the battery than putting in.
However, when I did a long run, the Stop Start would then work again.

Because of low use, I'd get the Low Battery message on the dash upon entering and even after my local 8 mile drive to & from the local shops.
I even had the alarm go off in the middle of the night, as when the battery gets too low it sets it off.

Got the main battery renewed a month or so ago, and when I collected it, it had the 'eco' amber light illuminated on the dash.
I suspected it was the small ancillary battery, so renewed that as well and the dash light went off.
Still no Stop Start though, until I had a long journey when it started working again .... then none when I got back to my normal low usage.
I'm even back to getting the Low Battery message when I don't use it for a while.
Btw, I've only done around 3k since May!

Small battery is for ancillaries only and not to start the engine.

In light of my experience, I do find it strange that your friend's Stop Start is working, whilst at the same time gets the Low Battery message. Confused

I'd start by checking the connections at both poles on the battery and at the chassis end of the -ve.

When does the low warning come on?- if it’s when the engine is not running it is normal, it will come on after around 10 minutes, less if other electrics are switched on and usually the only time a low battery warning will be displayed.
If the SS is working the main battery is fully charged, if SS is not working with no warning lights the main battery is low on charge or low on amps and needs replacing, if the eco light comes on and SS does not work the small auxiliary battery is not charged or faulty.
When the SS stops working it is an excellent indication that the battery needs a top up charge with a smart battery charger Thumbs Up

Well it a bit unclear. I’ve left his house now. I have advised him to get a plug in voltmeter and put it in the accessory socket so he can keep an eye on the voltage.

Can anybody tell me if the iid tool that is bound to my car will be able to reset his BMS system?

No it won’t, easiest way is a hard reset, but you will not do any harm trying and they will do more on an unlicensed car than just read faults, like live values for instance.
You could buy him a license for Christmas -£25 then it would Laughing
The plug in volt meter is very useful I also have one plugged in continuous, remember a D4 charges higher when idling than when under load, also volts alone don’t turn an engine over amps do that and you need around 800 of them to start a TDV6 and a plug in volt meter will not read them Smile

I thought the iiD was "read only" for other vehicles ?

would a hard reset do what you need ?

That’s what you are led to believe, but it is quite surprising what else they will do, but certainly not fully functional like changing CCF, etc.

I did reset the service reminder on another D3, so it will do a certain amount. Worth a try.

The early D3’s had a facility on steering wheel settings to reset it, but it was done away with software upgrades Big Cry

Yes it will, a local FB user reset my 2014 D4 BMS with his single licence D3 IID tool.
