Hi, this may be a Stupid question but I can seem to find the difference, I'm looking at Buying a D4 around 2010 - 2012 reg mileage etc depending, but I keeping seeing either 3.0tdv6 or 3.0 sdv6! Any advice of the difference greatly received as I can seem to find the answer on the web! Thank you!

If you are set on 8 speed box then it makes your hunting easy to identify what you are looking at when browsing used car ads: 8 speed always has the rotary gear knob
Never mind the Bhp it's the Nm, the 8 speed uses the power better as the ratios are closer therefore smoother Altox GSM FBH controller thread

Agree the 8 speed will 'use' the torque better because of the closer ratios; but the NM are the same between the two aren't they at 600?

I believe I'm right in saying that the 'S' in STV6 referres to the sequential twin turbo set up (which in part deliveres the extra power discussed in the above link).MY12 D4 HSE Marmaris Teal

The engines, I understand are the same twin turbo 3.0 litre v6. It's primarily (but not only) the gearbox that is different. There's really nothing wrong with the 6-speed box, but the 8-speed is better by a margin and that is the main difference. As you say, the 10bhp difference is there but in the great scheme of things, both cars, being what they are (big heavy bricks) zip along surprisingly well, especially when compared with previous incarnations.
The rotary pop-up gear selector was not a universally well received thing by many, but the criticisms seem to have quietened down. Which would make sense. Having driven both, the rotary knob takes a bit of getting used to, but it grows on you.

Righty. They couldn't have made it much more confusing if they tried could they. Unless it's me just being thick.
So you can get:
3.0 TDV6 which is 245 bhp on a 6 speed box.
3.0 sdv6 which is 255bhp on a 6 speed box.
3.0 sdv6 which is 255bhp on a 8 speed boxs which has the different gear selector. Normal 2012 plate onwards.
So really going to have to check paperwork before buying to claffiy just what is what and check chassis numbers etc
