4 Wheel alignment

Does anyone know how involved a 4 wheel alignment is. One dealer say the job takes hours and is very involved, another give the impression it is straightforward.

otresb - had mine done ealrlier this week, including the TSB to preset correctly. This was to fix a big issue of outside edge wear in the rear tyres. Took MLR approx 3 1/2 hours, and made a huge difference to the 'feel' on road. Mine is a late 2005 build, purchased here (new) in Feb'06.
 Why have I never felt this way about a 4WD before?

Thanks for the reply

Had Cooper HTs fitted a few weeks ago after rear Wranglers wore out on outer edge. I had the alignment done through MLR, they sent the car out and it came back with the alignment measurements, but they did not mention there was a tsb for rear wheel alignment..
Coopers much quieter and seem to handle well.

My local dealer quotes about £100 - which must be about 1- 1.5hours-ish for 4 wheel aligement

If your getting excess wear on an edge, particularly the inner edge, there are two TSB's covering this.

One puts the car into the Dynamic Suspension Setting mode and takes a few hours as it involves software upload/download stuff.

Once it's in this mode, the geometry can then be set.

If it's only 1-1.5 hours, then the dealer isn't putting the car into the setting mode (or perhaps doesn't need to as the alignment problem isn't bad).

My STT's made a terrible racket prior to having the geometry reset. Now they're really quiet (for STT's that is!)

Following the reset earlier this week, I had new 17" rims fitted to the HSE today, and fitted with Cooper STs. The noise is much less than I'd expected, and the performance offroad (yes, had to check it out on the way home) is really good.

The 'feel' both on and offroad is much better than before the reset earlier in the week. Well worth all the messing about. Took the car past MLR on the way home, and got a 'bling, bling' greeting from the workshop crew, so new rims must look good!
 Why have I never felt this way about a 4WD before?

Did you have to modify the front brake disks? Or is it just a USA thing and the petrol V8 with the bigger disks not allowing 17" to fit. The Petrol V6 has smaller disks in the front and 17" will fit, but not on the V8

only the V8 (world wide) has the bigger disks, deisels and V6's can fit 17" rims.

I found suitable 17: alloy rims a little difficult to source - they need to have a minimum internal clearance of 397mm, so those with a coned innner often failed to meet this size. A number of options Ford are having built for the 08 Territory fit nicely - mine came via Adventi Racing, with a 995kg rating.
