Quite. I have it in my diary already, not sure which day I'm going to head up but if you are going too, let me know which day. Happy to say hello and get a second opinion on my impulsive purchases...

Have booked for the Sunday which is the only day I can do. Not ideal I know. In Copenhagen at the begining of the week and Exmoor on the Friday for a Honda Off Road Adventure day so hopefully not too bruised Rolling with laughter .

Here's a voucher CCCWEB ... saves a few quid unless you go on the Friday (saves a little more)

A couple of comments from me. We have always had caravans as the space and fixtures & fittings have been what we like, but from last year quite a few sites (especially in France) won’t take large twin axle caravan any longer.

At the other end we have close friends who have a VW camper (only about 3years old) who have realised it’s too small and doesn’t have the things they need to be comfortable, as whilst they look great on a pitch with the sun shining brightly, on a wet windy afternoon in Yorkshire it’s a different story.

So go have a look and think about how it works for you under the most miserable weather conditions then everything else is a plus.

Have you thought about converting a van? It's much cheaper and you get what you want. I've converted a Renault Master 17 seat minibus into a camper van. I've built a better interior than you'll get in any camper, I can stand up in it, it has a large double bet permanently made up, a diesel heater that is brilliant and I have almost limitless power 12v and 240v with a 3kw inverter. I just need to add in the kitchen and its finished, but its usable now. I'm hoping to go away next weekend gravel riding in the New Forest in it.

It's not fast and at the moment the outside looks like a Censored van but it's cost me £7k and I can escape in it with my bike or SWMBO whenever. Also, I don't need to worry about it.

I was at Malvern Caravan and Camper show at the weekend and was rather taken with a Tribe VW T6 camper conversion. My thinking was to combine my camper van and Defender into just one vehicle but not sure I want to spend £82k on it! Really cool though and superbly built. Thumbs Up

I'm also thinking of a roof tent and camping set up in my Defender. Not sure my wife is on the same page with that! Laughing

As for caravans, we have a vintage Colchester that is really cool and cute, that has been used once in two years and costs £800 a year in dry storage. Big Cry Its great fun when we use it, but thats the crux, we never seem to have the time. Crying or Very sad

I wish you well with what you decide, its all a conundrum. Laughing

If your fit able and the hooking up and towing not an issue its got to be a caravan ,loads more space and once your on site then you have the freedon of having your car . and of course great justification for having a disco Very Happy

im a long term caravaner and can never understand the point of a motorhome unless of course for any of the above for perhaps medical or age reasons then yes i get it .

my friend had a van for years and recently swapped to a motorhome and very much regrets it and is now looking at small cars to tow behind ..His wife was a very nervous passenger hence the swap but he finds now he goes out far less than they did because of the inflexibility.

A campervan however is a slightly different thing and great id say for the odd weekend or pitching up in a carpark for days out,but wow the cost is ridiculous theres a saes place near me with a load of newish but still second hand VW cmapervans all lined up with prices from 60-85 K !! £30K-40K gets you a pretty tidy D4 and van combo and for my thinking represents far better value for money

Just been away for the weekend in my Caravan. Whilst there saw a couple of Cathargo motorhomes parked up near us. The homes must have cost over £100,00 each. But, they still had to tow a car around for when they arrived at the site as they didn't want to have to pack up every time they went anywhere. I just pulled up in the Rangie unhooked and that was me for the weekend. I had the car to run around in and didn't have to pack the caravan until we left on Sunday. It also fitted under the barriers at a number of car parks.
You don't need to be fit to move the caravan, just fit a motor mover. I also frequently pass Motorhomes/Camper vans on the motorway as they seem to be so under powered that they have trouble going over 60 Mph. The Rangie pulls the van with ease and is very nice to be in.

I keep coming back to this which I think is a steal at the price.

The caravan and car is a good consideration but I'm just worried about limitations. With early retirement considerations looming I would like to just head off for 3months at a time, maybe abroad, and I'm curious if the caravan combination would be more restrictive.

The future surely must be to move towards camper vans? Electrification means it will be much less practical to tow a caravan. Electric camper vans are already on the way.

I think many campsites could start hiring out small electric cars for people to use whilst staying there.

I really like these, but they are not big enough for what Lady Nasher and myself have planned.

Oh, and they are stupidly expensive.

I have been caravanning for over 20 years so have a good idea what is what with them.
However I think you have missed a key part and that is what exactly are you going to use it for and where.
If you are touring an area and only stopping in one place for a night or two then a camper would be best.
If you are going to Europe and staying in one place with no days out etc then a caravan would be best.
If you are doing a lot of touring in areas where the roads are single tracks then a camper would be better.

As others have said I would suggest hiring each to see how you get on. We brought an old caravan when we started and ran it for 12 months to see how we got on and it worked really well with young kids as we didnt tend to travel around instead stayed in one place for a week at a time as a rule.

Good luck and post what you get in the end.,

I am surprised no-one has said it already but the only better towing vehicle in the world than a D3, is a D4....

Wow! That's a smart home. I'd be happy living in that for as long as needed. A bit pricey for my needs, mind you...

Unhelpfully, all of the above! They'll be a mix of short 1 or 2 night breakaways, either with or without the wife and kids, and inevitably some longer stay aways at sites for a week or more both in and out of the UK.

I reckon this is the best I've seen so far. They don't make it in 6 berth any more, but can find a few nearly new second hand. I could remove the 5th and 6th bunk and put something more useful in that space - more storage perhaps. It's not the most luxurious but very well laid out (I love the rear door) and practical with options for 1, 2, 3 or 4, berth very easily. Also not too big, so lighter weight for when travelling alone. https://granthamcaravans.co.uk/model/carav...mp-6-2022/
