This is about a 2014 D4 with the 8-speed gearbox with rotary knob. It has 100.000 kms. In the past week I have had three incidents in which the gearbox knob would not select D. The first two was when reversing after which I was unable to select D. When I turned off the engine the gearknob did not disappear in the centre console like it usualy does. It jammed somewhat half way. When trying to restart the engine I got the message: gearbox not in Park. After several attempts to restart I managed to get the car going and all was fine. The third incident was when I stopped to mail a lettre. I left the car idling in P for half minute, but when I wanted to drive off I could not select D. The knob was stuck solid in P. Switched off and started again several times before I could select D. What is going on?

There were instances of gear know getting stuck due to dirt jamming it on the inside getting there through the gap between the knob and roatry know body
it is failry easy to take it apart to check whether it is the problem
aslo reading the DTC code would help it the issues is electrical not mechanical
good luck
