I seem to recall reading once that the aircon refrigerant contains a lubricant for the compressor, so it could just be running dry.
Not sure though..

Does the noise stop when you turn off the AC from the heater control? If it does stop, then a regas with the correct amount of PAG (polyalkylene glycol) lubricant is the first thing to do. If, after the regas, it still makes a noise, then suspect a worn AC compressor.

If the noise does not stop when switching off the AC, then suspect the pulley and/or clutch are faulty and need servicing.

Hi joe
What sort of cost to service pulley and clutch or is it a complete new ac unit?

Call me on Monday to discuss or drop round anytime and we'll have a quick look to see what the problem is.
