| Addaptive lights gone cross-eyed |

I was on the airport run early hours of this morning, coming down the A49 I kept getting flashed by the trucks, I noticed that the beam from the lights was very high, lighting up the trees rather than the distinct low line of the beam, it was as though the lights had stuck on main beam but the extra main beam lights did go off when the lights were dipped, they can't have been completely stuck because the were still moving with the steering wheel, anyone had this problem before or is it a trip to the stealer to have them checked out  I'm not as good as I once was........but I'm as good once as I ever was.

On those lights, there is a 'cover' that slides out of the way when you go on full beam to allow the full light. Xenons don't have high/low beam, just the cover/shutter that slides in and out o fthe way as required.
It sounds as though it is stuck & either needs nudging to move back or replacingn (under Wty)

Definitely the shutters on the xenons. I had the same problem: it tended to occur if I had been driving for a period of time (40 mins+) and had had the lights on full beam for long periods. Problem was, the fault refused to show itself at the dealers (even when they put my lights in one of their staff D3s to monitor it for a couple of weeks). It wasn't that the dealer didn't believe me, it was that LR would hit them for the full cost of the lights if the fault didn't show up 'on the bench'! Hope yours is easier to solve.

Hi,
Usually the shutters sticking won't give a fault code, so dealers have to act on your findings as opposedcto finding a code.
Was it both lights, or just one?

With mine, it was definitely both lights (I proved it by driving close to a wall and noting the beam heights); which made me suspicious that it was something else that was at fault, controlling the shutters. However, it seems that the shutters are fired by the same switched 12v feed that switches the fill-in halogens, and they behaved as normal (i.e. the halogens would always go off when you went back to 'dip' but the shutters didn't drop).
I know others have had the fault (search for 'stuck xenons') but that seemed to be on one light only which seems a more likely scenario.
We'll have to wait to hear from Hobgoblin to see if he thinks his was one or both lights.

Thanks for your replies guys, loads of very useful information as usual, it would seem on mine it is the near-side only, I put my hand in front of the lights and got SWMBO to switch from low to main beam, off-side you can see the shutter move down and change the beam pattern, whereas on the near-side the pattern doesn't change, looks like it has stuck open, it would be better IMO if they tended to stick closed rather than open; as this would not blind oncoming drivers, or do they sometimes stick either way
Spoke to stealer and he said if I can run it in to them they will have a quick look, otherwise can't get booked in until next Thursday  I'm not as good as I once was........but I'm as good once as I ever was.

Just got back from stealers, took it in so they could have a quick look and they fitted a new headlight unit under wty while I waited result.
I think I will have to take back every negative thing I have ever said about Shukers in Shrewsbury, I have nothing but praise for them  I'm not as good as I once was........but I'm as good once as I ever was.
