Adding another notch to factory tracks

Looking at the factory short tracks I would like to see the rear crossbar positioned further back. There is plenty of space in the tracks but due to the design of the factory crossbars, they need a notch in the tracks to do so. Taking a look at the track it would seem like a fairly simple mod to take a Dremel and add another notch more towards the rear. Has anyone tried this with their D3/4? Anything I should be concerned about before cutting back the material?

Can you not put the cross bars on using any of the cut outs, and then slide them to the rear?

There is no issue putting the crossbars on it is just that I find the rear most factory notch for locking them in place not far enough back. There is a good 6 inches of track behind the rearmost point. I am thinking of cutting in another notch behind it to enable a more rearward mounting point.

I thought you could lock them anywhere along the track - but not where the cut outs are?

From my limited experience so far I seem to be only able to lock them where the cutouts are. If there is a trick to locking them anywhere I would love to know it!

You can only lock them where the cutouts are, but I think if the crossbars are any further back the tailgate hits when open fully - have a look for yourself

Do they need adjustment to allow them to slide back further - not sure if this is on the underside of the cross rail or at the end.

I have Thule feet and they work as Bbdisco3 is thinking ... just slide away from notches and tighten them up.

Al cope is right. When the top tailgate is opened it encroaches on the area. Even more if there is a rear ladder fitted.
