From expericence, the ball keeps the antenna (aerial) from hitting the car. Keeping it low keep the antenna from swinging too much but still provides protection.

Have changed my front and rear LR badges and the wheel bearing caps for the RRSport black and silver ones. I think it looks great on my Stornoway Grey SE espeically with the privacy glass! - thank you Ebay!!
