I haven’t mentioned the s***p word.
For me getting anything other than a genuine LR engine with a decent 2 year warranty wouldn’t be the way to go. A “reconditioned” engine, crash damaged car’s engine, pull the engine apart and replace all the bits, etc, are all too risky. Having experienced one engine letting go when driving, it’s not something I’d want to repeat. Plus lots and lots of peeps here and else where went for a “cheap” fix and then had that fail on them shortly after. Pays yer money & takes yer risk, no thanks for me.
But that brings in economics. I was “lucky” re that choice, the car died thousands of miles from home and it was worth about £3k so no brainier, she was stripped (to a limited degree) and scrapped. For a car that’s worth 10k before a new engine will not be worth much more with a new engine, it’s just been put back to where it should be, maybe worth £11k tops. Without replacing the engine maybe worth £2,000 as is, prob 50 - 100% more as a pile of parts. Also you start to get into the “I’ve spent £x thousands on it so I have to keep going” mentality, therein lies madness. You still have the rest of the car with aging parts and could easily be a money pit. Once these things start falling apart it’s rarely just the one thing that goes.
As said not a good place to be.

What I don’t understand though is if parts are available like new cranks, shells etc, why can’t they be swapped out for new units.
It’s common on the BMW M power engines for the bearing shells to be replaced as preventative maintenance - S54, S85 etc
They are swapped out and no issues. Obviously if the crank snaps, that needs replacing as well. I posted a link to Turner Engineering who can supply the parts. So can someone with the tech knowledge explain why a LR specialist can’t replace the crank and shells etc and get these engines running again. I’m just trying to understand why this isn’t done? I knew parts were not available at one time, but seems they are now.
I’m away working at the moment and one of the boat engines bent some Con Rods in one of its engines. The engineers stripped it down, replaced the bits and it was working again in a day. They were MAN V12s.

I am sure I read that the block gets damaged when a crank snaps, or when a shell spins.
If you think about it, a crankshaft is mounted in the block, with virtually no endfloat. I don't know the tolerance on a tdv6 or sdv6, but even on my venerable old Series 2.25 petrol engine, the crank endfloat is only 6 thousandths of an inch maximum. If a crank snaps, its not going to be a nice smooth break with perfectly flat surfaces rotating against each other, its going to be a rough break, and when the two broken sections rotate against each other, its going to break something else, perhaps even cracking the block.

I know someone on another D3/4 forum (such things do exist!! ) that had his D3 engine let go, he thought coz it was at low speeds (engine at idle speed) it would be fine to just replace everything. He spent a lot of time and money rebuilding the engine and was confident, until he started it. Lots of money wasted and that car is still a driveway paperweight, I think.
Too many peeps throw good money after bad. When mine packed up I was able to say “ it, it’s just a car”, that really helped me get my head in a better place to get her stripped & strapped, then get all my kit home, a 4 day drive.

Thanks guys for all the replies, sorry haven't been active in the last couple of days, I'm back to normal on Thursday so will be back on this then.
I went to see the car yesterday, it was pretty upsetting but at least I could see what had failed - photos are attached here for you to look at! I need to decide whether it's worth me trying to get it fixed, or to get the best price I can for it in the state that it's in..
