Advice please! Keep faultless D4 2011 or "risk" a newer one?

Hello all,

I've got a real dilemma. I love my 2011 D4 but it has already 157.000km on the clock, mainly on motorways though (around 20k a year). This car has been simply faultless which seems to be quite rare for a LR!
Should i keep it till it dies or should i succumb to temptation and buy a newer-8 speed gearbox- low mileage one? Are the differences between them worth paying the extra 20-25k euros and take the risk of coming across a "lemon"?

Thanks for your help! Thumbs Up

If it's was me I'd keep the old one but as soon as it's looking like I'd have to pay big bills I'd get rid of it sharpish. Next owner can pay those. Thumbs Up I made the mistake of assuming my D3 would go on forever and every little thing was done to keep her happy. A mistake I won't be making again. Thumbs Up

No amount of chat is really going to convince you that the 8 speed is excellent so best go and test drive one....

@ DSL,

Thanks. I'll have to have the timing belt changed in about 10k km as per service schedule. At a cost of around 1.100 euros. Big Cry

@Canburne,

Thanks. I've heard that the 8 gearbox is very good, especially for long journeys (my case)...but not so much around town. I've read in here that fuel consumption is about the same which is a bit disappointing Sad

cheers!

Both my D4's are 8 speed so cannot comment on that aspect.
What I can say is the original one (2013 reg) I have had 16 months, has 126,000 miles and is the one I prefer driving. This one is also 210bhp one.
The newer 2014 reg, is a 255bhp, with posher interior and spec. Bought from LR approved used June this year. Has already been back to fix what should have been done in preparation for sale once and is going back again soon for new lower front arms, door lock again, lower steering column, window motor issue, noisy transfer box. This had approximately 68,000 miles on when bought.
So if it were me I would stick at what you know and like.

Good luck with your choice.

My MY10 D4 has around 94k on the clock. I’ve had the suspension arms changed at around 70k and the timing belts done.

I’ve often looked at a newer D4 - but the work I’ve already had done will just need done again on the newer vehicle over time.

Personally, I couldn’t justify spending tens of thousands on a newer version of a car I love. Yes, there will be repair bills, but I’d be going some to spend as much on repairs as I would on a new car.

Doesn’t stop me looking, though Very Happy

@chugga90,

Interesting testimony...so you actually prefer the driving experience in a basic TDV6 model D4 to the plusher HSE SDV6! In your case the newer D4 model gave you some hard time. Sad
That's what i'm afraid of...

@Scott #55,

Yes, i should be ashamed of even contemplating changing the car that i Love...i feel guilty! Embarassed

Cheers guys. Thumbs Up

I've got a 2010 D4 and I often look at the dealers and contemplate changing for a newer one. But I don't. Yes, there are improvements and the gearbox is a biggie, but again, I've had the belts done on mine, it's got just over 70,000 on the clock and is going along just great (touch wood) although the suspension arms are the next job. So I will have a fair investment in it to recoup. And, let's face it, the 6 speed box is still pretty darned good.

Warrant Direct paid for all my suspension arms and front wheel bearings - saved me more than I’d spent on the policy.

Yes, i keep looking at the ads daily just for the pleasure...it's such a handsome car! To tell you the truth, if i had found the one i really want (grey with almond interior), it would've been difficult to resist and not give the owner a call... Laughing

The 6 speed gearbox is great! The only advantage of the 8 speed for me would be having 200 RPM less at 130 kph to stay at 2.000 as i travel down to Portugal...saving me i'd hope, 1 to 2 litres each 100km?

Thanks!

I had this delema 10 years ago Shocked , looked at and test drove RRS and FL2 that had just come out was offered £12k in part ex, every time I drove Home I thought what Am I thinking of changing for as I still liked what I'd got.
10 years on I still like what I've got although it has had a lot of mods done, I still get my leg pulled about swapping, but why when it does everything I need, drives as well if not better than the day I bought it and what's it worth? - £8k on a good day!

It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

The newer one is a well specified XS.

Just really surprised and disappointed by how a vehicle half the mileage and posher is not my first choice to drive!
Also really disappointed my approved used and the experience that provides.

Sold my high mileage Tdv8 Range Rover, spent three times the amount I got for that and want my RR back!

Final moan for the day, the tdv6 fully loaded, towing a trailer most days does 33mpg, according to the display, the sdv6 empty struggles to do 30mpg again as the display.

Keep the good one!

You can also ignore what the trip comp is saying, reality will be a good chunk less than that. My D4 gives 32mpg (actual) when cruising empty on the motorway at 60mph. Fully loaded and towing that would prob be 26 - 27mpg. Whistle

On the mpg, I was just presuming they both lie in equal measure?
The tdv6 is much less sensitive to heavier boot, than the sdv6 - you have to really try to get the mpg better in this one.

Suppose it's better the most used one does better?

Thanks everybody. Great to have your feedback! Wink

You probably don't know this but the french government is rising taxes on diesel in order to get, in the short term, it's price aligned with petrol. This to "encourage" us getting rid of our "polluting" diesel cars. Sad

Are the 8 speed gearbox D4's really more economical than the 6 speed ones? It would be a plus point if it's the case, at least for the Pocket. Razz . Lastly, anyone knows where the RPM needle stays at at 80 mph/130 kph (french speed limit)? Mine stays at 2.200 RPM... Confused

Cheers!
