Having had ongoing problems with xyz sensor going haywire, my independant specialist says i need a new sensor, ok i thought thats not too bad about 140 quid. only problem is they reckon theyve got to take the gearbox out to get at it!!! while theyve got the gearbox out they will check the clutch and replace if necessary (97k on the clock). Quote is 600 quid without a clutch. I just want to know if this is correct and im not wasting money

Price is about right for that, it could be done by just lowering the box but it would be really really awkward, if you loosing the gear display it could defo be clutch, I got mine done for £1070 all in so just weigh up if you have the box out if it's better to spend the extra £400 now or you may find it ok now but may need one in a few months. If you do have it out check your manifold crossover pipe, that's a box out job too. Pipe is £360 expensive I know but if it's looking dodgy better to do at same time rather than pay £600plus on labour anytime after,

faults with the xyz switch itself is unlikely(dependant on the fault codes that are stored? usuall it is the cluch that is slipping causing the fault, either due to being worn out,pressure plate being weak or you are riding the clutch!
you can easily change the xyz switch by just dropping the rear of the gearbox,should be able to do in an hour.

Got to agree with top-tech here, the vast majority arent caused by an actual switch fault but normally the clutch.
