| D4 rear brake disk replacement |

Am using Bodsy's brake bible, but for the D4, there doesn't seem to be a parking brake ratchet screw to loosen through the rotor hole - is that correct? once the torq crew is off, can I then get the disk off? if so, why is there the other hole there?
oh, and having taken the whole calliper off, can I remove the pads without dismantling it further, or do I need to talk that apart?

D3 and 4 are the same. Make sure your looking in the right place. It's at the top on one side, and 180 degrees different on the other.
Use the hole with the plastic plug, and move the disc around until you see the ratchet. A small powerful led torch helps.
The screw holds the disc to the hub.
Once the shoes are backed off, and the screw removed, the disc should come off.
You need to remove one or both of the slider bolts to release the caliper from the frame, to release the pads.

ah found it. 11 o'clock, drivers side. Now I know I need to undo it, but which way is that? (i.e. which way is it installed; I know anticlockwise to unscrew  )

all the way until the disc comes off. Remove the T45 (don't hold me to the number) screw first.
I think its simply anticlockwise. Can't see them being left hand thread although is possible to fit them the wrong way (does that reverse the direction, head hurting on that one...).

so it's probably top away from me  made it turn a bit - hard to tell, really. Disk rotor now off, anyway.
next issue is that to undo the calliper, I need a thinner spanner than the Halfords Professional ones I have. Did have a cheapo set, but can I find them when I need them? At this rate I'll be better equipped than KwikFit.....

One way expands the shoes so the disc gets tighter. There should be more loosening adjustment than tightening. Don't be afraid to put a little squirt of WD40 through the hole.
My gut feeling is to loosen you go from centre of wheel to outside, using a flat screwdriver.
A tap with a hammer and my fat Halfords spanner is enough to stop the calliper bolt spinning. I did buy a thin one off ebay. My old Halfords set was thin enough. Once the bolt is spinning and free they come out pretty easily IME

ta. And as everything is off, am looking at replacing the epb shoes. However, it's hard to tell what's shoe and what's backing - which might mean it's got no shoe left..... is there a good way to tell?

is that chamfered edge up to the pad all brake pad? so if I've still got some of that, it's fine (even though black)? it's all pretty smooth, so am thinking most/all of the pad has gone. What's the min thickness before replacement?

No idea. I've seen them de-laminate but never wear down to the metal.
They are not expensive to swap but fiddly. I'd not do them if everything looks ok and in good condition (just adjust them properly). Lever out the adjuster and give it a clean up/lubricate. Put some copper slip behind on the raised contact points on the backing disc.

On the very outside edge of the backplate you will find a notch, line the hole up with it  It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
