Airbag light on....

Morning folks,

I’ve got the airbag red warning light on on the dash. It started intermittently but is now on all the time. It does however take differing times to come on when you start and drive the car. Sometimes it comes on straight away, sometimes it’ll be 1 minute down the road.

I’m hoping to get it scanned to give me a pointer to where the problem may lie, but in the meantime I’ve done a bit of reading on here and checked under the seats.

I’ve checked these connectors under both seats, but I’m not too sure if this is the airbag connector.
If it is, would disconnecting it automatically throw on the airbag light?

Had a similar problem. Charge your battery for a starter. The plug under the seats is held together by a 7mm bolt. Undo this and separate both parts and check if corroded. Give them a clean with WD 40 and re fit. If that doesn’t work get the codes read and clear the light. This may clear your problem, it did mine.

Thanks for the reply, sounds like that isn’t the connector then, lol. I’ll go and take off the seat base and see what’s what. Cheers Thumbs Up

Think I’ve spied the 7mm bolt near the front of the seat behind the cover....

So I took both the panels off the front of the seats and unscrewed the 7mm bolts, unplugged and then plugged back in the block connectors and tightened up the bolts again. Airbag light was out! Went for a drive to pick up one of the kids and hadn’t gone 50yds and the light was back on! Argh. Oh well. Next step is to take the seat bases off completely and have a good look at the wiring... Just following up on this thread...

I took the seat bases off...t40 x 4 from underneath...bit fiddly. And then inspected the wiring connections... did all that and put the key back in the ignition and hey presto the airbag light was off. So it has been off for about a fortnight three weeks, but its come back on.

So got the cover back off the drivers seat and again had a look at all the connections, blew them out with an airline, have ran out of contact cleaner, and put all connections back together. Air bag light still on! Fook.

So could anyone point out from the pic below which is the actual airbag connection block? I think its the wiring running from front to back and to the side the airbag is on the upright? Pretty annoying this...

Hi

That yellow wire is indeed the seats side cushion airbag

When I first bought mine I had a lot of issues resulting with me having to take half the interior and headlining out so understand the frustration it brings , inc replacing seat airbag, curtain, pre tensioners , ( long story ) Whistle

Enclosed a pic of what the seat airbag looks like

Personally would start with getting the codes read , hope that helps a little Thumbs Up

I agree that you need to get the codes to see if you can find out which airbag it is. I had the intermittent light on mine and it turned out to be the clock spring in the steering wheel had a faulty connection...

I’ve had this a few times in two disco 3’s. The issue has always ended up being the cockspring, despite the wiggling of under seat cables appearing to have sorted the problem briefly. There’s an excellent clockspring removal guide on here and no more than a 10-15 min job. Just disconnecting and ‘rewinding’ the clockspring may sort it.

Thanks for the replies folks!

Is there symptoms of the clock spring airbag going faulty? Ie, does it bring on the airbag light once you’ve turned the steering wheel? It was certainly pretty random to begin with but its now on permanently. Ie goes off very briefly when you first turn on the ignition, but comes straight back on.

Does everything work ok on ur steering wheel , ie horn, cruise control , radio buttons as I think if the rotary spring fails it can also cause some of these to fail

But of course not 100% and stand corrected

Have u also checked both of ur front seat pretensioner wires arnt being pulled tight and both black connectors with the 7mm bolt are nice and tight

Don’t forget , don’t pull these connectors apart with the battery still connected , best to disconnect the battery , wait for 30 x mins then take them apart , is the same ref battery if u want to remove the steering wheel airbag , need the hook tool as well for that airbag removal Thumbs Up

Apologises if u knew that already

Ps, wonder if someone is near u with a code reader, Thumbs Up
