Airbox screws

Anyone know what size the screws which hold the airbag lid are?

Three of mine have been previously removed by a ham fisted git using the wrong bit and are knackered and some fool i.e me dropped one and lost it Rolling Eyes

Ah well, I am sure I can find other items to make an order up from the good folk at Advanced Whistle

The disapearing screw most definatley did not go into the airbox Gareth, goodpoint though.

Advance factors are OOS for these airbox screws with no know date for new stock.

Other than the Ford / Jaguar alternatives at over £7 a screw, does anyone know of a suitable alternative / upgrade?

A couple of mine have mangled heads from previous services & i'd like to tidy it up.

I've search local fixing companies for stainless, torx / allen key alternative with partial thread but I'm struggling!

Anyone out there got a solution?

Cheers Thumbs Up

does it need to be partial thread ? has to go in through a hole that takes the threaded section doesn't it ?(not looked)

Hi,

So the partial thread does two things I guess.

1. Ensure you don't lose the screws when you remove the airbox lid
2. Ensure the airbox lid to be pulled down onto the airbox casing when tightened.

So i'm improvising Smile

I picked up some stainless No2 x 30 posi head screws today. As you can see below i've filed them to a partial thread.

They are a little thicker than the original, so i might have to re drill the hole in the plastic, but the plan is to heat then & then screw them in to recut a new thread.

Keep you posted.........

Ok, it worked & i'm quite please with the results. Just a little thing, but it looks better & I now have easy access for the future.

I drilled the lid holes out to 4.5mm. This gave enough plastic for the screw to bite & then the un threaded shank of the screw to drop through.

I then refitted the lid but removed the screws one by one. I then warmed each one gently with a blow torch (not to hot so as to melt the plastic, just soften it). Then drove the screw home & left to cool. Once cooled, I removed them all again & sprayed with a small amount of lithium grease just to help prevent any seizing. Refitted.

They now screw home like a father into a mother Smile

Here is the end result for £1.05 & an hour of my time

Beats the £50.40 Ford wanted for 7 x Screws (1250493)

Hmm, 5 x used Landrover original airbox screws on fleabay anyone? Whistle

Cheers Thumbs Up

Torx head is a big improvement vs Philips type, the operations of unscrewing and screwing are much simpler and the screw head will not ruin.
