AirCon Compressor

I've got an annoying whine, a bit like the torque convertor whine. It's been bugging me for a while as it changes with engine speed.

Finally realised today that if I switch the aircon off by using the econ button the noise goes.

My question is what is failing? Aircon Compressor or something else?

Thanks !

Air Con compressor front bearing is more than likely knackered....

I think the only choice is a new unit Crying or Very sad

Sounds expensive Big Cry . I wonder if my Warranty Direct warranty will be any good Confused

Thanks

I've only ever heard of the whole compressor unit being replaced - I don't think there are any service parts available Crying or Very sad

Could be tricky as to whether they'll pay for it Confused

Good luck, Thumbs Up

My 1st D3 did this, I never replaced it and it whined on for many 1000's of miles, so don't panic.

ok, quite why it started after 76,000 miles of peaceful motoring I don't know.

I'm trying though to adopt the mentality of not worrying about the odd little noises appearing. Now I have worked out what it is, I think I am feeling more comfortable than before. 5 year old cars should make noises I guess.... but having had it from new I know all the little noises that are fresh Laughing

I've spent the last few weeks trying to suss out what the noise is.

Good to know that yours didnt cause an issue Thumbs Up

I had the same issue with mine too and it was replaced under warranty.

It made the noise for around 6 months and apart from getting louder during the first month or so, didn't seem to get much worse after that....it was annoying though.

Although I wouldn't get too stressed about fixing it immediately, I think I'd definitely get it fixed if the noise gets worse Thumbs Up

Mine does the same, it's awaiting a unit which is on back-order at the mo.

Could it be a common problem I wonder?

It's a known problem, but not a widespread one that effects most owners. Thumbs Up

Sturge, I just had my compressor changed @ Yeovil LR as it had started to whine 2 years ago, and was getting really bad. The whine had turned into more of a grinding noise, which at first I thought was the power steering pump but my bargain £3 ebay mechanics stethoscope confirmed the noise was definitely from the aircon compressor. The aircon pump is at the bottom of the engine bay at the front, and any wading in deep mud will expose it to a very abrasive mixture that eventually eats bearings that are no longer perfectly sealed from the environment. I've now had to change my aux belt tensioner, idler and air con compressor, all (IMHO) from wading in deep Salisbury Plain muddy water. The difference since fitting the new compressor is extraordinary - like a new quiet engine instead of the horrible noise it made before, which was very noticeable inside as well as outside the vehicle. As ever, speak to Nick about options for replacing it Thumbs Up
