We had this problem (in a big way) with our first D3 (2005 model). I seem to remember that there is a TSB on it and that it applies to some European models. Try searching for a thread on it, because I certainly discussed it here all that time ago.

Most lead acid batteries are considered to be below optimum at anything less than 12 v .

this post by 10forcash seems to hit the nail:
TSB LA419-004V2
"This bulletin supersedes TSB LA419-004/2006 dated 27 January, which should either be destroyed or clearly marked to show it is no longer valid (e.g. with a line across the page).
Summary:
A customer may report a concern that the vehicle alarm sounds with no theft attempt.
This bulletin has been re-issued to include a closing VIN.
Cause: Some vehicles have been built with an incorrect battery back up sounder (BBUS), or the unit has not been installed, or the correct unit is installed but there is a control module software error. The central junction box (CJB) is not recognizing the signal 'heartbeat' from the BBUS that incorporates the alarm tilt sensor. When the vehicle is locked, the incorrect or missing signal from the BBUS is seen as a theft attempt by the CJB and triggers the alarm.
Action: Should a customer express concern regarding the above, refer to the Service Procedure detailed in this bulletin."
Thanks all of you!

Yes Ian, it was hidden in a post "locking without alarm" which, judging by the title, has few in common with my problem. A search for BBUS, which seems to be the source of evil, showed this thread. Some people get by

Does anybody knows if the solution for the TSB LA419-004V2 implies replacing the battery by a more powerfull one? I have a 825amp battery. Moreover, the battery seems to be in doubtfull condition (black indicator) after nearly 3 years.

Actually - in my case- it looks like it's either a dodgy bonnet switch, the "bonnet open" message is now coming on while driving although the bonnet is fully secure.
Or it was the great big moth that flew out from the passenger door when opened just now.
I'll get the bonnet switch looked at but hopefully that be it sorted. Also Gone : MY14 D4 SDV6 HSE : Barolo Black + Almond

I dont know if mine is related. But after washing off all the dust, and opening the main battery box, and washing off the dust inside as well, my alarm kept going of after say 3-5min after locking. I had to remove the battery, and dry the "electronic boxes" ect with hair dryer and voila , it stopped going of intermitently after it was dried properly.
My 2c
