It was the bonnet catch sensor on my Disco.
Replaced the original, which was gunged up, with a nice new microswitch version (not OEM) and the alarm has not gone off since I fitted it several months ago

As you say bridge the bonnet connections, this will confirm bonnet sensor fault.
Mine ended up being the ignition switch. When i unlocked and opened the door the warning chime for key in ignition would ring out. The car would lock fine and alarm would set, then at random think that the key was in the ignition and start alarming.
How did you solve this?

Bought a second hand ignition lock and just swapped out the ignition switch. It just clips on the bottom of the ignition lock, easy to get to once the steering cowl is removed.
Did not need to worry about changing keys or programming anything, just unclip and replace, the spring had weakened. Following alarming and on opening the door, key in ignition warning would be on dash along with chiming, these were the symptoms, this fixed it.

Great tip. Thanks.
Do you happen to have any "how to" info, pictures or something?
Not sure whether removing steering column is an easy job. Also, never saw the ignition switch removed to grasp how to change that.
So far, contact cleaner is doing the job. I will search around before starting dismantling the ignition and risk end up stranding the car.

Just the plastic surround not column. Few screws from memory, you may have to remove the lower cover, directly above pedals with the air vent in, 2 screws and clips to get column surround off, can remember, but not very testing. The black switch is just clipped on the bottom of the ignition lock, very obvious when the column surround is removed. I may be corrected but as long as you don't mess with the immobiliser ring you will have no problem and no need for programming anything to the car. Only my experience I don't profess to be an expert.
Assuming you've checked all the obvious, locking the car and checking all doors and boot have locked, bonnet switch is a common issue.
