Thanks Pete, going to try whacking the starter to see if it frees anything, then if it works play with the fuses

Short recess due to rain. Came back and switched the relays back over, and swapped F20 with f27, and boom started ok. Turned off, started again. Swapped the fuses and the clicking returned. Swapped them back and again clicking, back to square one >.<

Hi, last year I had a similar issue that drove me crazy.
I found the negative cable connecting the battery to body, just under the battery case, loose.
After a thorough tighten everything went fine.
Now I have a good spare battery and alternator, and lots of new tools.
If the cable conditions are visible impaired like burns around the fitting, it may be wise to change for a new cable and bolt, this gets loose with vibrations and poor maintenance actions.
In time this can lead to generator failure due to unstable voltage and current flow through the battery circuitry, then faults start to show.
Cheers, Gianni

yeah the battery earth cable to the inner wing are common for being loose
what relay are you changing? The starter ?
What are the 2 fuses you are swapping ? (alternator and something else)

I was swapping the 5amp fuse for the suspension with the 5 amp alternator. The relays were r6 and r7, rad in another thread to try it.
Just had starter out again, connected back in but same clicking noise. Will take the batter out and check the earth cable to inner wing.
Thanks all, will get there eventually!

Cable from battery to inner wing looks tight, no movement at all. Where is the engine earth? (Could that cause this?)

think the battery needs charging overnight
don't know about engine earth. Passenger side? Maybe early models don't have it?

Thanks Pete, had battery on charge for a day and a bit, currently at 12.81v on multimeter. I’ve run out of ideas so will probably get an auto electrician out to investigate. Puzzled why it worked twice earlier today but then stopped again. At least I’m getting better at taking out the starter motor

one thing you could try, ensure car is in park, with brake on.
get under the car, and briefly connect the large starter motor cable to the smaller one.
Sometimes a large flat blade screw driver will do this, as long as you don't touch metal chassis/engine! (maybe tape some of the shaft up)
or a lead with a crock clip. You will get a bit of a spark.
If the starter spins well, you know the starter and thick cables and battery are good.
If it doesn't spin over, could be the starter or the thick cables (or engine earth)
I'm actually wondering about the thick red cable on your car. And the fuse in it, in the + battery terminal plastic case. If this wasn't good it would prevent the starter working, (just get one click) and the alternator wouldn't charge!

Hi
Hope I’m not interfering
There is an Earth on the drivers side, trouble is it behind the inner wheel arch liner
Noticed it when I was fitting new struts

Hi Pete
Ur know considerably better than myself and please don’t think I’m trying to interfere , just interested
using a multimeter
Can u use one test lead on the neg battery post and then with the other go round touching different areas, like the engine , body etc to prove the earths are ok ?????
Then say from the starter motor earth to engine , alternator Earth to body etc
Thks as always

Thanks again Pete, much appreciated.
Not sure I’d be confident enough to try connecting the to points, I still get worried taking the battery terminals off
I did look earlier for the 400amp fuse, and searching for the fuse on google it looks to be an inline fuse yqe500310
My positive cable just comes straight up and onto the terminal, no fuse along the way.

Yes you can do that GS. Good indicator. Although things can change when there is a load
the repetive clicking in the video could suggest an earth issue or a knackered battery
