There is an Earth on the drivers side, trouble is it behind the inner wheel arch liner
Noticed it when I was fitting new struts
Thanks for the info and pic gstuart, I shall try looking under the liner and give it a check tomorrow.
And thanks Pete, the battery was changed in January to a exide premium. I still have the Bosch battery which seems fine so can try popping that back in.

Yes you can do that GS. Good indicator. Although things can change when there is a load
the repetive clicking in the video could suggest an earth issue or a knackered battery
Thks and see I do listen
Still remember doing that screwdriver trick on my old series
Assume then with a load ur looking for a zero reading on the multimeter on the neg lead

I did look under the engine cover to see where I would connect a jump lead but I couldn't see any exposed metal that looked obvious. I was also a bit wary of breaking anything else

Hi
Have enclosed a pic, do u see the metal plate with the 3 x holes drilled in it , is on the Rh side
Use a multimeter set to ohms, use one test lead put on neg battery post , other test lead on that plate , see if u get continuity
If u do then put ur jump lead on the same items, neg battery post then that plate , u can always use a wire brush on that plate to get a better contact if there’s paint on it, or sandpaper to just clean a small area of it
If u don’t get a reading with ur multimeter , with ur test lead on the neg battery post use ur other test lead to go round different points on the engine until U find a a reading
So that when u put ur jump lead on u know there good earth points
Hope that makes sense

That's great, thanks! I did see the three hole part but thought the paint may interfere, I'll give it a test tonight!

hi
Ur very welcome , will interfere if there's too much paint , just thought u could take enough off to get a good earth point for ur jump lead and is near the battery
Plus know pete is also extremely knowledgeable
Hope all goes well

Sanded down the metal and connected the jump leads and it fired up! Readings were up to 14.6 volts which is the highest I’ve seen it.
Have rigged up an earth cable from there to the inner wing for now, will try and track down the other earth on the weekend.
Makes me wonder whether it had been the issue all along and need not have have fitted a new alternator battery and starter motor! >.<
Oh well, it’s been a learning experience!
Many thanks for all the help and advice, it’s very much appreciated!

Hi Matt
Brilliant news and well chuffed it’s fixed
Well apart from looking for the faulty earth lead , but at least it’s up and running
Plse let us all know what u find and what was the culprit , bet ur pleased having the multimeter
Wonder if ur heart was in ur mouth just before turning the key

Have to admit the first time it fired up I thought it was a one off, wasn’t until after a few starts I believed it It does fire up quicker with the new starter motor, although that could also be the fact of a decent charge going in!
And yes, the multimeter has proven very useful!
Will check the arch earth on the weekend, have been meaning to try the front upper wishbones but may take a stress free weekend!

Just wondering if u can see that drivers side earth lead by removing the air filter box ???
Actually I’ve got some pics somewhere , will see if it’s on there

Just redone that picture so easier to see that earth lead
So u may not have to remove the drivers side wheel arch liner after all, see if these nuts have come loose , wonder if the starter motors Earth connects here ??
Or bad earth lead from this connector block to the starter motor
Indeed looks like the earth lead goes from the drivers side near the front strut and terminates here
Will wait with baited breath if this is the original issue and what u find plse

Thanks again, will be easier than the wheel arch! If it all comes down to a loose earth I don’t know if I’ll laugh or facepalm! possibly both!
