Alternator output

Would u mind if I may pick ur brains please

Been trying to find out the alternator output Vdc for a petrol 4.4 2006 RRS

His readings are

battery connected to vehicle but all doors closed and engine off: 12.6Vdc
truck running at idle, maybe the stereo was on: 14.
truck idling with alot of stuff turned on: 12.65VDC, truck at various RPMs with only radio on ~14.3VDC

new battery is AGM, 900CCA 1000CA, 160 reserve and 95ah rating

Do these figures look ok plse and should an AGM battery be fitted seeing they aren’t supposed to be charged over 14.8Vdc

Is it the same with only denso that should be fitted , alas don’t know if it’s the same 150amp like the TDV6 or a lower rating

Thks so much in advance as always Bow down Bow down

Those figures seem good to me, especially with a new battery fitted, I fitted a new alternator and battery a few weeks back to my D3, I have pretty much the same figures.

No idea about an AGM battery though.

Many thks and most appreciated

The guy is stateside , has found some bad connections in the engines fuse box, inc water marks , is causing untold issues

Pic is underneath the suspension relay

Very grateful once again, thank u Bow down

Some of the error codes , him using his Fox well code reader , also keeps getting “ lost comm with IC"

Gent bought it a few weeks ago , cheaply and trying to get the bottom of the fault

Also has this alternator fitted , been on there a while

Its not just the voltage issue with AGM batteries its the current and heat.
AGM batteries hold the electolite in a glass mat sandwiched between the lead plated of the battery unlike a normal flooded battery where the lead plates sit in the electrolite.

I have found some serious issues when using AGM batteries when the batteries get hot through charging or delivering high current, the electrolite evaporates from the outside of the glass mat and the battery appears to have failed with low or no voltage. The batteries are sealed so when they cool down the electrolite returns and the battery comes back to life.
I fit specalist equipment to vehicles and it was a pain to diagnose faults that these batteries caused.

AGM batteries were designed to be charged slowly and to give out low cureent for a long time, but now seem to be fitted to vehicles who often charge at high voltage and can have high current demands.

Thank u for the reply , very helpful Thumbs Up

Alas the guy just fitted the AGM , by the sounds of it the error was there before hand

Sent some pics to him of how to get the engines fuse box out to inspect inside and see if there’s any more bad connections

Indeed then wonder if it’s worth him fitting a wet cell battery , assume the issue become worse on the TDV6 that produces a higher output

Every day is a school day Bow down

Plus those codes keep coming back after he cleared them

Many thks once again for the great info

The bit that would concern me is the 12.65 at idle with lots of stuff turned on, I dont think thats charging.
I am surprised the alt is only 150 amp?

Iirc td5 was 150amp

Good point about brand.

Ask him what brand alt he has been fitting.

gstuart, you are a gentleman trying to unravel all those codes. The ones of interest seem to be possibly located in one plug. Not sure on a V8 though. If they keep coming back, even after clearing them then maybe it has not reset it properly. On a Foxwell reader there is a screen to reset the whole vehicle so maybe start from there.

All of these codes can be ignored, they are comms issues, if your having battery problems then these will showw up, its the P0 codes that need sorting.

12.6 at idle is to low, it should be higher, 12.5 on a battery with just ignition on is low, so 12.6 with engine running is bad. sounds like new alternator time, the output and charging rate is all controlled by the PCM.

He read these codes:

Just re looking - the "also keeps getting “ lost comm with IC"" means it cannot talk to a controller. The user must make sure his Land Rover software is up to-date, this is a free download to registered owners. So if using the Foxwell he does "Auto diagnosis" it will check all systems (takes its time) and will give up the errors. Then if he goes through them by clicking on them one at a time he will be able to read the error for that controller then when you do an erase for that error it will check the controller after the erase as long as he selects OK to "check after erase". This will show up a faulty controller and give the error message, so just need to note which system it was. Hopefully it will point him in the right direction.
I use a Foxwell reader (NT510) on my D3 and it work well.

The first message indicates the vehicle is not registered so all he can do is read codes

Thks again and have shared the link with him so he can also read what’s been written , know u guys have vast amounts of knowledge

Gent came onto the landyzone forum and I , like others do , always try my best to help the best I can , understand how frustrating it can be finding the elusive error

Apologises what’s the PO codes please

Gent has updated his foxwell to the latest software

I’m afraid I don’t know what battery was fitted beforehand or how old the alternator is, indeed see it’s a 145 amp output , also passed on ur comments concerning voltages

Thks again and will update later as the guy is stateside Bow down Bow down

Also not sure is this is one of those battery monitoring sensors or just an ordinary connector Bow down
