Is it my alternator on the way out

Hi all
Merry Christmas

I’m looking for your opinions on my little issue that I’m thinking maybe my alternator starting to fail.

2005 tdv6……..been awesome since I have owned but the last couple of days I’ve witnessed the following

1. Parking amber light flashing on and off once
2. Centre info screen turning off then back on
3. Radio cutting out then coming straight back on…. Twice emitting no music just more like a white noise (goes back to normal when the ignition is turned off and doors locked)

I’m thinking the start of the alternator failing…..

What do you think??

Cheers

A voltmeter which you or preferably a passenger can monitor while driving to note any variation in voltage. Never really worked out why but just taking it through rev ranges on the drive doesn’t always give the same results.

What you describe could just as easily be suspect earth circuits. There are a number of different earth studs throughout the body.

A classic but very simplified example is when one of the tail light clusters is bad. If you have ever followed someone with the problem what the lights do will change as they use indicators or apply the brakes. If one of the system earths are suspect you can get odd results as different devices turn on and off.

And worth checking battery earth straps to body and engine.

Simplest test is use a jump-lead from engine to battery negative... if problems get less, that's your issue.

Morning
Thanks for the feedback, I’ll have a look over the weekend

On the way into work this morning, I went into the hidden display on the screen and the battery voltage was ranging from 13v up to a spike of 15.5

Is that normal ??

shows the alternator is putting out variable voltage based upon demand which is to be expected - not sure how accurate the information is though if the voltages are actually the same if measured with a meter.

Figures won't be accurate if earth leads are shot.

13v to 15.5v is correct for a D3 on first start up in cold weather, the alternator only charges when the engine is not loaded and will charge at 15.5v dropping to 13v when loaded(pulling).
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Hi all
I’ve just been out to see my parents, less than a mile drive……. Pulled up outside, turned ignition off and got bags out of the rear seats. As I did I noticed the internal lights had gone off…..strange I thought. Closed the door and re opened, at which point the internal lights came on like normal…
But I noticed the internal clock had reset to 0000 and the trip computer had gone back to 0.

I was there for just over an hour and when I come to start her, there was a slight lull in the turn over crank before she fired up…

Think it’s some checking tomorrow in the light….

I’ve now put the heated screens on/heated seats and with the engine running, showing 12.6v at the battery

12.6v is the nominal voltage for a fully charged battery but under no load, this would indicate the power is being provided by the alternator.

That doesn't represent the full load rating so try adding in a few more devices and see if it can still regulate the voltage.

Hey All
Thank you once again for the advise and feedback, really means a lot

So last night I checked the battery and alternator condition, both where ok

I think I have sorted the issue, negative terminal on the battery had come loose ??? Anyway have tightened back up (touching my head) all appears to be ok

Thank you once again
