Amber suspension light - Suspension fault error on display

Hi all,

My first time posting on here but have been reading through some of the forums for a while now and can see it has a really good knowledge base so hoping someone can help shed some light on a problem I'm currently having with my disco 3 2005.

It started as an intermittent problem with the amber suspension light flashing up randomly during use. Sometimes this would be after a 5 minutes sometimes after about half an hour/an hours drive sometimes not at all with the fault "Suspension fault normal height only" flashing on the display. This went on for a few weeks but with the ride and suspension height always being maintained and appearing normal until recently. Until now when turning the ignition off and then on again it would clear the fault and revert to a normal fault free state. Now for some reason this has changed and when I start the engine the compressor doesn't even start to work making no noise at all and the amber light comes on straight away with the fault message "Suspension Fault" showing. To add to the problem when I locked and unlocked it yesterday it released air and has dropped to its lowest setting/access height making it nearly impossible to drive as the clearance is so low.

Any ideas what could be causing this and is there anything I can try or do to get it up and running before taking it to a Landover specialist?

You need to get the codes read to establish where the fault lies

As SeaRaider suggested you need to get the codes read otherwise it as all just expensive guess work.

There are a few good independent LR specialists in Herts so depending on where you are we can suggest someone to try.

Thanks guys.

I have purchased a code reader so will pull them off tomorrow and post the results.

Appreciate the help!

I'm going to guess it's the compressor exhaust valve sticking. Just had similar with my RRS. Required a new compressor.

Likewise, had similar symptoms with mine - required a new compressor.

Even if the compressor is new this can be a common fault. I'm on my third now in about 18 months. Each time its been the compressor that's died not a fault with the disco i.e a leak making it run and over heat.

I also had the dreaded orange warning light, Vehicle stayed in 'normal height only' for a few miles then the suspension collapsed onto the stops. Turned out to be a plastic hose had blown off. My indie fixed it in no time having read all the codes beforehand. Much relief as new compressor fitted earlier in the year. Simple enough job but I'm getting too old to scrabble under my D3 these days, plus I can't be faffed to work on it anymore and my indie is very capable and not very expensive. Thumbs Up

Ok so tried to read the codes but my reader is saying there are "No codes". I carried out a hard re set originally so now taking it that this has wiped the codes. I have re started it and get the same fault straight away so now wondering why it isn't picking up this fault as a new one and registering it. Does it need to run for a period of time to re register/get picked up as a new one?

I've got the amber suspension light on mine, whilst changing the side steps after bending them off roading, I could hear a hissing sound coming from half way down the air tank. It looked very rusty so I assumed it had a leak so I ordered a new tank off ebay. That's todays job. Hope it fixes it!
