Annoying intermittent noise from dashboard area |
|
Hi,
I have noticed a sort of chirping noise that seems to be coming from above the driver's foot well/lower dashboard area, and only seems to occur at around 70mph. It is not there all the time, but when it is, is loud and very irritating? The sound reminds me a bit of the noise I used to get from the fan belt on my Disco 1. But this time, the sound seems to be inside the car.
I normally pootle along at about 50-60mph, but was in a hurry yesterday to get a 200 mile round trip completed as soon as possible (in Scotland, from Montrose to Stirling), so I thrashed the car a bit. For interest, the 200 mile trip took 3.5 hours, average speed 57mph and 30.0mpg (onboard computer values). Not bad mpg I think.
Any ideas? In my one year of ownership and now out of warranty, nothing has been replaced/worked on in this area (e.g. windscreen). The only thing that had to be changed was the external cover on the nearside A pillar - but that was on the other side of the car!
Thanks,

Hi Rob,
This sounds like it could be a problem with the air-con recirculation motor. The noise is a kind of farting/chirping sound and comes from where you describe, but I'm not sure why it would happen around 70mph
If the noise just happens now and again, I'd get the dealer to look into this as a possible cause....if it's a constant noise and is definitely related to speed, then it is probably something else.
If it helps, have a read through this thread:

Thanks Paul.
When the noise was there, I did turn off the air con, and the noise persisted, so I guess that it's probably not what you suggest.
If it is as you suggest and reading your attached thread, it sounds like it would be better to live with it, rather having the dashboard out and possibly introducing other problems, especially as the car is out of warranty!
