Annual Holiday to France

Hi all,

We have just returned from our annual holiday to the south of france. 1,930 miles in the D3 in two weeks and very comfortable they were too. Just one slight concern...I had reason to brake very hard at 60+ mph on the motorway and was very surprised at the lack of stopping power. I was expecting the ABS to come on but basically the brakes just seemed to give up, I was slowing but not at the rate I would have expected. No other issues with the brakes. Does the D3 usually do this?

Thanks

Have you had the "oil in the brake servo pipes" recall done? Mine was like this until sorted. Another symptom was a rock hard brake pedal first thing in the morning! Thumbs Up

Try a search for +brake +servo +recall

I will check, thank you. I've only had the disco for 2 months so I'll refer back to the service history.

When I first got mine I was very surprised at the lack of stopping power when compared to previous vehciles (including my D2), I think it is just one of those things - big vehicle v higher speeds = longer and slower stopping - it certain caught me out a couple of times until I got used to it.

Whilst the D3 brakes have a great deal to do I would not say they were bad. About my only comment is that you only seem to get one big stop from 70mph when fully laden, if you need another one shorty after (as I did on the motorway) then they can start to fade. If yours are struggling then I would have them looked at pronto.

I did mean to upgrade to V8 brakes on last disk change, but that was required whilst I was out of the country so normal ones were fitted. I still intend to go to the bigger brakes on the next disk change to reduce the fade effect. Must get a price from TLO for disks and carriers at some point!

I'd have done a brake test before now... you need to know what's "normal" and what's "possible"...

If you open your bonnet and look forward left, you should seen a Heath-Robinson abomination of crappy pipework that only a British manufacturer could produce - if you can see this (assuming you have a TDV6) then you've probably had the recall done. If you can't see some fudged breather pipe work, you probably haven't, in which case look under the wiki and you'll find out all about it.

Your car doesn't sound quite right to me. Whilst the larger V8 discs make a difference, the original set up is still pretty good at stopping the car.
