Is much rather chance not having locking nuts on my car than the nightmare of A: trying to get them off when you break or lose the key, B: are stranded on the side of a busy motorway in the dark with a flat tyre that you can't change. I always bin the locking wheel nuts/bolts from our cars. More hassle than their worth. My old D1 had them. I could get them off with a stilson wrench. What's the point. If some thieving scumbag wants to try pulling the wheels off a 4x4 that's size good luck. I hope it squashes them in the process. Current : D3 2007 HSE - AKA the lemon

Was the original idea of the locking nut to prevent the wheels from being stolen and if so what prevents this from happening??
But, when was the last time you saw a car on bricks with the alloy wheels stolen from it?
You don't have to change them if you're worried about theft, and we reserve the right to say "we told you so" when (not if) the lockers fail. At the very least get rid of the original ones and get new ones from a LR dealer. That gives you 2 year warranty and it will include consequential damage, ie getting your wheels off. And replace those every just under 2 years.

Just like to say thanks to the contributors to this thread, I recently had a problem removing one of my locking wheels nuts and without this thread I think I would have struggled.

In a nutshell:
1) Ditch all the locking wheel nuts
2) Ditch all the original nuts with caps.
