Another Tailgate won’t open post... |
|
Hi guys,
I’ve read as many posts as I can about the upper tailgate not opening, and I’m having problems with mine..
I had already taken the switch rubber off and cleaned inside to remove corrosion, the micro switch could be heard clicking but nothing, not a sausage. The tailgate still opens flawlessly with the key button and the in-car buttons, so I thought “Hey, it cant be the solenoid, it’s a dodgy micro switch!”
So I removed the switch to solder on a new one and nothing! Still not working but still working with the key fob and the in-car buttons. Checked the voltage across the cables and I’m getting 10.6v through the two switch cables, 10.6v live to earth and the 0.5v I guess is the switched live to earth.
Is anyone able to shine some light?
Thanks![/i]

Hmm but if it’s the solenoid, wouldn’t I have a problem with the tailgate opening with the key? I can operate it flawlessly with the key as many times as I want, hearing the solenoid operate every time. Whereas with the tailgate switch there’s not a sound...

Had the same symptoms....
99% of the time it would work with the key or double push on the boot release...but leave my stranded if using the tailgate release.... my problem was exemplified because I had absolutely no way of crawling through the rear to release it manually due to a full cage fitted.
Replaced the solenoid and it now works perfectly....
Easy repair that you can do cheaply. When undoing the nuts that retain the solenoid you don’t have to remove them just release them a few turns as the unit will just slide out on the lugs...

Thank heavens for 5sec double button press. I thought that I would have cut up the old divan in the boot Dave

Your tailgate switch goes to a wiring block connector behind the trim which your boot light is fitted to. Remove that and check the wires. It's a really strange set up. The switch earths out a low +voltage and sends a signal to a unit built into a fuse box behind your glove compartment. Then that powers up the solenoid. If it unlocks with the key and the lock and unlock buttons on your dash then it's gotta be the tailgate switch not giving a earth to the wire I just mentioned.

Update for any other people with similar issues:
Dodgy, corroded earth wire to the connection block from the boot switch, replaced both cables and it works again now

Good evening all
Just taken mine apart as I have the same symptoms as above. Tailgate opens with dash buttons but not with tailgate switch.
I can see a connector block behind the trim- which wires do I need to check/replace?
Thanks
James
