Anyone here live/work in France/Luxembourg/Belgium?
As per title. Need some advice for son about taking his car over as he's potentially got a job in Luxembourg. Thanks

Thanks. Context is 23 yr old son passed test earlier this year (covid delayed), got him a little Hyundai i30 which was ideal. He's met a girl, they're doing a trial live together in Luxembourg near her work. Looks like it's going well and they need a bigger cheaper place - french or belgian borders (likely France). He wants to take his car out there in December, when they will need to have found somewhere more permanent to rent.
Looking for any advice on the car/mot/registration/insurance/driving regs situation. Also any useful tips about renting in France/working out in France/Luxe as a british citizen would be good.
As its all new with them he doesn't yet want to buy a car out there - he's looking for a better job than currently working nomadically for his existing UK based employer who want to keep him for as long as possible.
His lady is Lithuanian but lived in UK for 20 years till earlier this year.

I don't know how up to date this link is but it does tie in with my experience in other parts of the EU... ie you can use your UK car on UK plates for up to six months and then have to register it with the local authorities.
France might be easier than Slovakia in this respect as the authorities in SK wouldn't register a right hand drive car... so it was a trip back home to sell it and then a flight back to buy a local car there...I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

That was (2018) BEFORE Brexit i am afraid…. Could be differently now… maybe 3 month max on a tourist “like” rule? I really don’t know, but sounds logic..
She, on the otherhand may have some bonuses as a EU citizen..Best regards

hello.
I live in Luxembourg, and I also lived in Belgium and familiar with the situation in France.
In Luxembourg to register the car is pretty easy, and the taxes are very low.
In Belgium and France, it is a another story. It can take months and lots frustration in the process.
In France my advice is not to even try to do it by himself, he can go to a "Garagiste " ( a dealership, or a bigger mechanics shop ) , pay a fee and they will do it for him.
Unless is a great value car and / or has some sentimental value, I would not bother, but sell it back in UK and buy something local. It will save himself a lot of grief, plus long term it will be easier just have a car with the correct setup..

Well, cost of living are high in Luxembourg so is also the income of course.
For living in France, welcome for a daily traffic jam in the morning ad evening, on top of that a daily accident on the motorway to from /to Luxembourg.
Train connections are fine unless there is a general strike in France, which the situation will be even worse the following weeks / month.Welcome to France......
As already said in Lux, lower taxes, around 10 english speaking international schools privat an public, no problems with home office reglementations like in France.
Almost everyone speaks english in the shops, well it can happen that you meet a french person who welcomes you with " en francais, hein"..... well matter of.....
Newspaper and clubs in Luxembourg also.....and Pubs!
