Anyone had their radio out?

I contacted PAMA regarding their rather good hands free systems. This is their reply

Thanks for your email.

Can you let us know the type of radio and if possible the type of connector
on the back of the radio and I will make some enquiries for you.

Regards

Anyone know their way around the base radio and who makes it.
Thanks, BCP

The "radio" was designed in cooperation with Alpine, but that doesn't mean it's anything like an aftermarket Alpine unit.

I think its quite easy to get out, the plastic center console surround pulls off (from the bottom), and exposes torx screws on each side of the sat nav (if fitted) and the radio/cd unit. I presume that once these are removed, then the units will slide out.

It may be that the phone input is obvious, but somehow I doubt it. When I fitted my hands free, nobody could tell me anything, so I did not remove it. Be very careful with the wiring, because some of it is optical, and relatively fragile.

I have removed the base radio and made my own input to the aux socket for my iPod. There are 2 connectors on the rear. (Looking from the front of the radio) the right connector is the largest, it carries all power and outputs to speakers and the remote inputs from the steering wheel. The left (smaller) connector only has 4 wires. The red and blue are the aux input (pins 7 and 8 ), at the end of that row is a thin black wire (pin 12), this is the ground for the aux input. The only other wire is a thicker black one (pin 3) which is designated 'phone output', its exact roll is not clear to me. On this model I feel sure that these cables go nowhere! Let me explain.

What astounds me is that they fit a radio that has an AUX button with no way of inputing to it! I traced the loom (spent some money on access to the GTR (£6 or so) and printed out the electrical library parts which gives the route for specific connectors) from the AUX to where it should go, the rear of the centre consul, only to find that the wiring stops at the first connector behind the accelerator pedal and go no further!

Sorry for the ramble, Gareth is quite right, you have to be brave and pull the bottom of the centre surround, then remove the torx screws from the top switch panel, air con controls and finally the radio. (be careful the plastic on these items are painted and easily scratched)

Roddy,
Do you not have the AUX input at the rear of the center console next to the 12v socket?

Base model with base radio has no sockets behind the centre consul. I purchased the panel (took 4 weeks) and fitted the power socket no problem. It has an aux socket but as I found out the loom is different and the wiring is not there!

I have a friendly service manager who is going to get me the connector so I can connect to the aux socket with my own cableing.

Woodman's document details the Touchscreen and not the Radio, but he does cover his method of dash plastic removal.

I had a Nokia car kit fitted. I poked my head in the car and saw too much of the radio "internals" when he was fitting it.... but the chap did point out that he had found the phone mute port, but no "input" to get the calls routed through the speakers.

So, the radio does mute when the phone is in use, and audio is from an external speaker, which is hidded somewhere I know not where !
..............Somewhere in-between my old D3 and what's to come next .........
