Anyone with Access to TOPIx?
I've just registered on the TOPIx site and confirmed my email, but when I try to log in it states :
"User access not possible, please contact the helpdesk for assistance"
We've just had confirmation that our D4 has suffered a crank sensor failure - see THIS THREAD. Nasty failure mode - not safe when it happens at speed.
I've seen two references quoted in relation to this known issue - recall P080, and Service Bulliten LTB00680.
I've seen the affected VIN range (for D4's) quoted as AA510178 - CA652214. Our car falls into this range.
The dealer and LR Customer Relations however tell me that on TOPIx the VIN range affected by P080 is much tighter : 626753 - 653082. Our car doesn't fall into this range.
I'm obviously trying to understand where the original (wider) VIN range is actually quoted, as I have seen it on here, and separately on another LR forum. 2012 D4 HSE for her

I'm not able to find LTB00680 on Topix, so I suspect it's not valid anymore. And P080 is the smaller VIN range you've been quoted."OIL" - 1990 200tdi Defender 90

Thank you gents 8)
Bit weird that there is a (small VIN range) "recall" for the crank sensor, but then a (much wider VIN range) service bulletin saying "if you have to change the crank sensor, also change this bit".
Which seems to imply they know the crank sensor VIN range may be wider..... Otherwise why would you just be changing it - it's hardly a service item 2012 D4 HSE for her

It may be they know the D4 is widely affected but are trying to keep a lid on it to avoid a substantial recall cost. However if an engine cuts out at speed on a bend due to the fault it could lead to claims that far exceed the cost of recalls D4 GS 12MY

Just out of interest, what would happen to the car if say either the engine cut out, or the crank snapped and locked the engine?
Apart from the weight transfer of coming off the power, would the gearbox automatically disengage the drive/wheels? or would they lock up as well?
Obviously in a manual, you can dip the clutch to freewheel, but I don't know what would happen with an autobox? Would be good to know?

For the crank sensor everything goes dead, but you coast. As stated in my main thread - there is probably enough residual pressure in the brake servo to bring you to a stop (?) but you lose PAS almost instantly.
Not sure about crank snapping - suspect it'll coast in neutral.2012 D4 HSE for her

I confirm,
LTB00680: VIN AA510178-CA652214
P080: VIN 626753 - 653082 (years 2012-2013)
Oh great, a smaller vin range and mine is still slap in the middle of it.
No recall letter as yet though.

The car is never the same after the repair. Clunkier and less mpg plus your always thinking, what's going to give out next or even if it's a prelude to a gearbox replacement. I got rid of it and don't regret it, who wants to live with that uncertainty?

Well, it is speculation, but with all major repairs, it depends on how good the fitter is and whether other components were effected.
I have spoken to someone else who had the repair and they found the same as I. It's a major up by LR. I loved the car, but not if it was going to screw up again.

Well, I've had the work done, and considering my chassis number being CA641*** they only changed the crankshaft position sensor under the recall. I though if it fell within the tighter VIN range then the pick up ring was replaced too, I guess not.
Car feels like nothing has changed.

Well, good luck. If you can get away with just the sensor, maybe it will be fine. Perhaps my problem was the ring, far more of a job to do and therein lies the potential for Murphys Law I suppose.

I asked the question about the ring but they said it wasn't called for on the recall action. I won't hold my breath, time will tell, lol.
