Arb and arb style winch bumpers are they legal in uk
Hi guys getting extremely mixed responses I am live in the uk but want to fit a
Arb winch bumper or arb style winch bumper with the full bull/roo bar on the front,
But unsure to the legalities of it, the gov website doesn’t really say yes or no.
And there are mixed opinions.
However there are at least two people around my location who do have them sadly not on discos
But they do run arb bumpers but don’t know them havn’t been able to ask them.
Keen to do shortly as a large lump of conrecret and breeze block was placed in a Ford crossing
And has smashed the lower part of my bumper which is pushing me to look into this soon than
I had planned. (Teaches me for not checking before hand even thou it shouldn’t of been in there)
In brief unsure if it’s legal or not to drive with such bumper/bull bar combo on uk roads.
Many thanks in advance
Sebastien

Clearly stated off-road only , but a phone call to them will no doubt answer this in finer detail. Procrastination is the thief of time!!

Statement
This document provides general guidance and advice on the legislative requirements in Great Britain relating to bull bars fitted to vehicles. Every effort has been made to ensure that it is factually correct but recipients should check with the producers of this document if they are unsure about the validity of a particular regulation after the date of publication or if they have reason to believe any part is not correct or is now out of date.
General Requirements
It is not illegal for vehicles to be fitted with bull bars, although the Department would not recommend their fitment unless it has been shown, through compliance with specified safety standards, that they do not pose an additional risk of injury to pedestrians or other vulnerable road users.
There are no plans for legislation to require bull bars that are already fitted to be removed.
However, since 25 May 2007, it has been an offence for bull bars that have not been approved as compliant with those safety standards to be sold. Approved devices will carry an indelible ‘e’ mark (example below).

Put the damage down to experience and ponder on why any sold since 2007 are illegal for road use I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

AFAIK a winch bumper in itself is legal ...the complication arises when raised bars are included as they then perform a similar function to that of a bull bar.

I think from this then my safe option would be a winch bumper such as Bearmach’s
Which is just the bumper. And cheaper option.
Still confused by how people have them on newer vehicles such as 64 and a 66 which
I have seen i’m Guessing they are either running the risk or have found them for there jap
Vehicles which are e marked.
Definitely putting it down to experience, and luck I didn’t do more damage,
Many thanks

Bull bars are illegal full stop.
However a winch mount with winch fitted is perfectly acceptable.
I have had winch bumpers without winches fitted and gone through mot with no issues.
If you want one just budget for a winch as Well.

That is true, which is why most companies will happily sell you the device and mark the invoice “for off road use only”, as was mine.
As to the use. It is perfectly reasonable and legal to have a mount for forward mounted equipment, such as a winch.D3 07 SE - still going strong

I would imagine a winch bumper with or without bars would destroy an unlucky pedestrian.
Ive got an old 90 with a very heavy pto winch in a galved bumper and the guy in the old jap car who pulled out in front of me got to look at his engine without needing to lift the bonnet several years later I can still see the paint scar on the bumper which was the only damage to my car.
