The STT is very noisy, but i hardly hear it now as i have become accustomed to it.
I would not recommend it as a good high speed tyre, as you can feel it slide a bit on bituman, or for that matter on sand, but is FANTASTIC on Rocks, mud, ruts, etc.
ST is a good compromise.
I had to use the 17 inch rims to fit the STTs, but i believe that in the US there is an 18 inch version.

I would do it all again if i bought another truck,
IE Bull bar with winch, Coopers STT on 17 inch rims, dual batteries, CB radio etc.
If i can stretch it maybe a snorkel, driving lights, side steps, but would have to see one fitted on a vehicle first.
What i would love to have but is not designed yet and that is a rear bar with tyre carriers.
BTW - I have a few North American friends that i go 4WDing with and they all call it a truck, is it called a truck over there or a SUV?
We call it a 4WD over here in Oz.

I call the LR3 a truck based on my last D2 which was modified and very tough! This time I'm trying (not easy) to keep the vehicle somewhat stock, nice to drive, but still capable off road which I do sometimes. I'm thinking about Black Rat hand winch vs. Warn, keeping weight down, no brush bar, sliders, skidplates, so gas mileage and drive is nicer. Your thoughts?

Sorry for the late reply, the holidays !!!!
Hope you had a good holiday season so far.
I have not used my winch so far, guess the truck comes fitted with all the gear to get you out of trouble like traction control and diff locks etc.
I make use of the air compressor a lot, the dual battery is handy with all the modern gizmos that require a rechargeable battery (video camera, telephone, etc).
The winch is a good back up and i guess one can do the same job with a hand winch or a portable winch.
The most useful modifications were the coopers STT and taking off the mud flaps.
Don't see much use for a snorkel as i have had mine at the max recommended depth of 700 mm and found the water was nicely deflected away by the wheel arch guard. May be useful for a better air intake and fuel efficiency.
Would be good to have a metal rear and side step for body protection.
There are not many SUVs/4WDs that can be taken off road as stock standard, and be able to match up to the modified cars like the D3 can.
Only downside is the amount of plastics underneath that cannot handle 4WDing and break away easily.
