Arrowhead pads

I am told (by the brake manufacturers) that all D4 / D3-replacement o/e pads, for the rear brakes will have the pad material shaped like an arrow head. It apparently to overcome the squealing issues?

Current design of rear pads

They were changed a little while ago to this design, is this what you mean by arrowhead...pointed side ortions ?
The originals were all square

I beleive there was an issue in hot climate country's on squealing but never heard of it over here

Interesting.....

I suppose if the pads have some bits cut out to make this shape, then they would loose some surface area....

Wouldn't this affect the braking performance having less pad in contact with the disk? Or would there just more more pressure per cm2 on the available surface?

Nick, remember when I had the Squeak Squeak Squeak all the time in the early summer, when the brakes were warm, well those cured it, as the originals must have been there since build, with 8mm still left. SO a big Thumbs Up on the design change from moi

I need some of those!

It doesn't squeal on short journeys, but on a longer one it develops.
OK in a straight line, but slight turn on steering wheel is awful. Stops when foot brake applied.

I think the rear floating calipers allow the pads to contact the disc edge and so it sings. I stripped and cleaned them about 5000 miles ago which cleared it, but now it is back with avengance.

At 3yr service the dealer said all pads were 70% worn and new discs will be required. She's done 37K and still on originals. They quoted £765 inc VAT for all discs and pads!

Now saving up whilst using up the 30%! Laughing Laughing

SS, without doubt, this NEW'ish pads will stop the Squeak, mine had the same Symptoms after cleaning several times, and eventually opted for the pads to see if it was them or a caliper.........cheap easy fix in the end

Yep that looks like the discription I had.

I do not know which market generated the concern, the feedback from LR was there was a problem and the manufacture put it right (begs the question about EPB)

EPB is shoes inside the disc drum...not these pads.

i will try to find out what the issue was ut it was not UK or EU orientated

Never had an EPB problem! (oops never say never!)

I think the rear discs are combined park brake drums too? so does it mean when new rear discs and arrowhead pads are fitted the squealing problem is solved, and potentially the park brake assembly has to be fiddled with causing another fault to start?

MAC cheap and easy? neither me or the Monstropolis has ever been these. Razz
and definitely not words from within a LR dictionary!

Now we know the shape of the new pads, I guess anyone who thinks they may be the cure for their squeaky brakes and have plenty of material left on, could try removing say half a millimetre from the face of the pad perimeter to create the new contact shape, if it silences them okay Thumbs Up and after you are satisfied with the 'fix' extend the profile to say 2-3 mm of the metal and when they start to squeak again you'll know it's time to change the pads, even if the proper wear indicators fail to alert you.
If not, nothing lost and you could even return them to the original contact shape with a bit of work on emery cloth. (wearing appropriate PPE of course).

You could, although I would not recommend removing much, there must be a optimum relationship between surface area and applied force, but I do not know what it is.

some info about pad noise - http://www.apracing.com/info/info.asp?section=Brake+Noise_45

Just follow the profile shown in the photograph, I reckoned that as the new shape is already available as replacements the manufacturer has already determined that it's fit for purpose. Whistle just like the EPB Rolling with laughter

It seems to me that people are assuming that the brake compound hasn't changed, just the shape. Is there any evidence to support this?

Best Wishes,
