Hi Guys , this is my first post on here š forgive me if my technical knowledge is minimal ! I have a 09 D3 140k miles sheās just had a full service of her transmission as a problem with rear Diff (2k all correct oils etc ) She now has fluctuating revs and a judder when either holding a constant speed (towing ) or climbing the hill to our house .
Can anyone tell me it that sounds like a failing torque converter or does she need a new gearbox ?? ( sheās had most other parts !).

Good evening
I've just got my disco and I have the judder from my auto box.
From what I have read on here a flush and maybe some tranny to be added to my new atf.
I'm Sheffield so could anybody point me in the direction of someone in my area that could carry out the process.
Any info would be greatly appreciated
Many thanks Daz

OK, here goes.
Gearbox oil and filter changed at 10year service by LR, now 7 years and 50K more miles I had a gearbox judder towing caravan back from Devon.
Checked various threads on here and decided to check oil level and add some Dr Tranny.
First error was to check oil level without engine running, resulting in an oily arm and drive https://disco3.co.uk/forum/images/smiles/icon_whistle.gif
Anyway this time with engine running added 1 tube Dr t and 1/2 ltr revanol HP oil, result was instantaneous and no issues towing caravan to Cumbria and back - result.
Question now is:-
A) Do nothing
B) Drain gearbox and refill + Tube Dr T.
C) Drain replace pan and filter refill +Dr T.
D) Power flush the system.
Any thoughts or recommendations.
Cheers

After 7 yrs definitely replace the filter, fresh fluid and possibly 1 DRT, i would do a fluid change every 2 years if you tow a van regularly.

Thanks, thought that might be the first option.
Re oil change, until I read these threads I assumed LR know what they were stating IE every 10 years or 150,000 Miles according to the service sheets.
Think I'll be doing more regular oil changes.
Wont be towing for a few months now so might wait for warmer/dryer days before doing a gearbox pan and filter change. [/list]

Hi guys. I had similar problem. Mechanic adjusted belt and its worked fine until few month ago. Now I have new problem:
Gear doesn't change. I start car select drive. Car slowly moves forward but then hear doesn't go up. Rev increase dramatically, engine is screaming n then hear changes to second third etc. Until I slow down or stop. Sometimes it's happens even if I just ease acceleration. It gets worse when im driving up the hill. That's when it's cuts off completely. Or when I'm turning corners. As soon as I turn the wheel n start accelerating revs goes up a lot and gear won't change until I straighten the wheel. Gear oil been changed a year ago.
Any help will be much appreciated.

Judder going up hill in 2 and 3rd gear |
|
Hello,
Great community! I used to fix my motorbikes 20 years ago, and have missed getting my hands in oil for a while.
Got my first Disco a month ago after watching repair videos for 1 month beforehand
I did not expect to get lucky, but man, seems all the regular things that go wrong will need fixing within a month of purchasing. So far I had fix seized front caliper and bent disks, seized EPB (still fixing this) and now the dreaded judder in 2 and 3rd.
Long story short, straight after I purchased it in Dec I took to for a full service to the only independent garage that specializes in LR in Bulgaria. Belts, auto transmission, differential oil etc. Seems the service has done more damaged then good to the auto transmission. The car has about 143k miles on the clock and never had the transmission serviced. There was also a small leak on the plastic screw thing in the picture, but not sure for how long it has run with low level of fluid. From my 100mile trip between purchasing and servicing I did not notice any judder, and conversely the judder has been getting progressively worse since the service (500 miles ago)...
The service included change of oil (8l according to the bill) and new pan and filter (plastic 1 piece). The transmission was reset after the change.
I called the garage the other day, and they say it is likely the torque converter. This may well be true, but a bit strange the problem came on after the oil change.
At this stage I only have basic OBDII tool - no engine or transmission errors are being picked up. Ordered the GAP IIDTool from UK, will have to wait 2-3 weeks to arrive.
My plan for remediation is
1. Check oil level. Get some fluid out to check colour and for sludge. In Bulgaria you have to doubt anything a garage says they have done. If looking dirty do full oil change, but don't change the filter ( changed 500 miles back). Add 2 x Dr Tranny.
2. If the above does not help, take off filter, change Gearbox Valve Block to Vacuum Control Adapter in the actuator, put in new 2 part filter and sump + new oil, + 2x dr Tranny.
3. If this does not help - get the converter refurbished.
I think I will be ok to do 1 and 2 myself, 3 seems beyond me.
Should I do something differently?

Hi Prasi00
I can only speak from experience of nearly 200,000 miles in my D3. First time I had the judder at about 130,000 miles I had a new torque converter. All good for say 30,000 miles.
Second time I just added one tube of Dr Tranny. All good for about 10,000 miles. When judder returned I did a drain and refill ( not as good as a flush which changes all the ATF oil). All good for another 10,000 miles. When judder returned again I added one tube of Dr Tranny and then started a routine of drain and refill every 10,000 miles. Kept the judder at bay for a long time - not sure how long.
The most recent judder was again fixed with one tube of Dr Tranny. You can add up to two tubes.
The next time it happens I will use my GAP tool to monitor live values for the valves in the transmission. I am interested in seeing whether at my mileage the seals between the mechantronic unit and the transmission are failing causing the judder/slip. If they look good I will drain and refill.
My view is:
There can be different causes of the judder
Both a flush, drain and refill can prevent it for a while
Dr Tranny does work for a time
Regular ATF drain and fill will often stop judder reoccurring
ALWAYS use the correct ATF. I have only ever used the ZF Lifeguard 6 (mine is six speed auto)
Barn1e 2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 197000miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, GAP IID, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.
