Auto Gearbox

I have 2006 2.7HSE Auto and after climbing a steep hill and the box having dropped two gears upon going over the brow and going down the other side I expected the gears to go back to top, but it stays in the gear I climbed the hill in. Is this normal?

The vehicle has moderated mileage and has not been off roaded. I am new to Discovery Ownership can anyone help or advise.

Thanks David

It is normal for the gearbox to stay in a lower gear if you are descending a long hill. The gearbox is also clever enough to sense when you might want it to hold onto a gear, for example if you induce kick down, and accelerate hard, then lift off the accelerator and coast or brake, it will hold onto the gear until you next apply accelerator. This means that if you are driving fast, the engine will be in the correct lower gear ready for your next demand for acceleration.

I also noticed on long steep descents, if you are on cruise control and the car starts to freewheel beyond the set speed, it will drop a gear to increase engine braking.
