Auto Gearbox gets stuck in 1st

Had my EGR done and the suspension packers on the rear anti roll bar yesterday and it was fine on the way home and this morning driving to work, but this evening the gearbox is holding onto 1st gear until the limiter. If I switch manually it works fine and is smooth.

I can't believe it is related in any way to yesterdays repairs, but any clue as to what might be causing it Sad

Now I'm no techie, but reckon it's something to do with the external selector rods - whatever that is Rolling Eyes

Reason that I say that is, once my D3 was holding on to 4th and not shifting up.
When passing a dealer this was an explanation he gave to me.
Said if I was off road or D3 was jacked up these rods would not settle back correctly after going back to normal road height.
Road salt on these rods adds to the issue.
In the end my issue was in running with a different diameter front wheel [spare] after a puncture.

Now it all might just be a load of tosh, but you decide.

Hope it gets sorted.
Thumbs Up

Could be, the odd thing is the ignition key got stuck a couple of times and I couldn't get the key out. It was as if the car was not in park and the key can't be removed.

The problem is your gear selector cable/linkage assy.
The reason your gearbox is holding in first is becouse you are in first(gear selector is in drive at the cab end but inbetween gears at the gearbox end so 1st gear only)
This also explains why you could not remove the key(in park at the cab end/selector but in reverse or in between gears at the gearbox end so not in park)

Hope this helps

mouse.

Thanks for the info, it got worse though, on the motorway (in 6th gear using manual mode) it suddenly lit up like a christmas tree, HDC off, then Special programs off, then suspension lowering. Oddly though when this happened the gearbox worked again.

Also I found out that before all the lights came on, it would work perfectly in low ratio and not in high ratio.

Right further development, plugged in a code reader and got P1935. This apparently is Ford code for brake light switch. Looked round the back and found the brake lights permanently on.

I guess the gearbox doesn't like you trying to accelerate while it thinks the brakes are on. If it is a switch is should (fingers crossed) be simple to change.

Found it, spoke to BAS tuning and he suggested removing the bulbs. Did that one at a time, but noticed that the sidelights came on with the brakes (even though lights off), once I removed the offside brake bulb the sidelights went out. Left this bulb out and went for drive and it worked perfectly. It is a dodgy earth on the brakelight, which confuses the car into thinking I was driving with the foot on the brakes. This then caused the cascade of errors I saw, bit like when the brake bulbs blow and cause a short.

At least it should be easier to find the earth fault now, could even just be the bulb.

NOTE TO OTHERS: bulbs are hot when on, I now have "PHILIPS" burned into my finger.

A code reader Rolling Eyes

Thought that would be the first port of call.

Did I/we miss something ?

Confused

There was no fault code before, when I got the errors and suspension dropped, I thought I would check again Embarassed .

Nothing wrong with the switch though, just the earth on the bulb.

EDIT: The fault lights came on after my first post, I went out to Spotters to drop off his bike rack.

I did, one bulb was blown and the other came back by itself, which was probably the earth fault starting Embarassed .

No link to work done yesterday though at garage.
