Autobox reluctant to change into highest gears
I've noticed recently that the car is being reluctant to change into the highest 2 gears, especially if you accelerate hard - even backing right off won't encourage the change. I can select manual and put it into the highest gears with no problem. Also if you come off the accelerator all together this usually encourages the change. It's a V8 that's just turned 100,000 miles, don't know if this is the same box as on the V6.

Have the fault codes read and see what that presents. Next drain and flush the transmission and fit a new filter/sump if it has not already been done. Should be done around 60k and every 40k thereafter to get the best out of the transmission.
If you do a search on here there's tons written on oil change and flushing, but check the codes first and go from there. yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Is this with a hot engine or cold? The gearbox is designed to hold lower gears when the engine is cold to help it warm up, it could be a faulty temp sensor.Andrew

Do the gears change up when you use command shift?🏴

My V8 is a bit like that too.
It will also sometimes kick down at cruising speed on the motorway (especially on cruise control) and hold the lower gear for longer than strictly necessary for maximum fuel economy (!) sometimes I flick it across to manual and it changes up on request immediately.
I put it down to the V8 being the "sporty" option at the time of release and wanting to be off the leash

Mine does that too, on the motorway I usually select manual and put it in top and that stops it. Had a BMW that did the same only way to stop it was to drive faster!!

Yes
Then this is your D3 telling you something is wrong.
It’s therefore not allowing you to travel at higher speeds.
Example: many years ago I had a puncture on my D3.
I changed the wheel then had this same problem (that I could overcome by using command shift).
Took it to the nearest dealer to the area I was travelling through.
They put it down to some gearbox connector rod that would’ve been bent whilst jacking it up.
However I continued my travels (using command shift) and was going to book it into my dealer when back home.
Meantime though, I had the puncture repaired, then refitted to my D3.
And, total surprise, the gear changing issue had disappeared!
Now the bit you’ve been waiting on:
I had been running a full set of oversized tyres on the D3, BUT I had kept the standard supplied wheel/tyre as a spare.
And the gear changing issue had occurred because the D3 sensed a wheel with a different rolling radius to the other three, it therefore (for safety reasons) restricted automatic gear changing to higher gears.
So if wheel/tyres are not your issue, there’ll be something else causing it, but as said it should be a safety thing rather than a gearbox fault.
Good luck. 🏴

What are the other two tyre tread depths like compared to the new ones? The tyres need to have the same rolling radius all round on these vehicles so normally you replace all four at the same time otherwise it upsets the gearbox and travtion controlAndrew

Both rears replaced, so should match the fronts were were changed a couple of months ago, they are different makes though so will check the rolling radius

Thinking about it, since I changed some suspension parts and the near side front hub I get the traction control coming on on tight right handers - have I upset the wheel speed sensor in some way???

Did you get a four wheel alignment done after the suspension work? Possibly check for a sticking calliper as well.

I did get it four wheel alined by two seperate tyre firms, but have never been happy with their work as it doesn't handle or steer like it did before, going to take it to a LR specialist in the near future
