Every time I get in the car I turn off the Stop/Start - I really should remove the fuse... anyone know which one & where please?

I've just had mine fixed so that the start stop works, in hindsight I wish I hadn't. Start stop is hardly smooth in one of these & nothing like in a normal saloon car where it can be almost unnoticeable, a right PITA in my opinion, plus the added concern about excessive crank / bearing wear.

When you find the fuse, let us know!

So you're saying starting my car is bad for it?

When the engine is not running oil pressure is zero.

When the engine starts it rises from zero to running pressure. The wear during this time is obviously much greater than when the engine is running.

Clearly there will be no wear if you don't start you car. Thumbs Up

I live in a rural area with narrow lanes and plenty of horse riders. Having stopped to let a couple of horses pass by and just as they were level with the car the ECO cut back in starting the engine and startling the horses. You would have thought the horse proximity sensor would have prevented the engine re-starting.

Well, I remain of the opinion that stop start is great, and has zero effect on drive-ability. If fact I get annoyed now if the car sits idling on the occasions it doesn't operate.

I have faith that the designers of the system believe that sufficient oil circulation / pressure is there to avoid premature wear. Suspect that in the vast majority of cases the rest of the vehicle will expire before the engine.

Just consider: those who sit pumping out needless diesel exhaust in town centers are the ones affecting our and our children's health, and accelerating the anti diesel crusade.

Not going to comment on the irony of owning a car that is harmed by starting it!
Agree with comments about cutting emissions. I live a few miles from one of the worst places in Kent for air pollution which is caused by cars queuing at a railway crossing leaving their engines running. The air quality in that road is dangerously bad.
When I occasionally drive into London, the stop/start kicks in constantly. I noticed a real difference in MPG of around 8-10 , between when it didn’t kick in ( main battery not good enough) and when it did ( after replacing the battery).
I’ve also heard people complain about it kicking in at awkward times as they are slowing. Never had a problem with it. Perhaps my brake switch sensitivity is set up differently to them?
Cheers

On the D4, stop/start should only stop the engine when the vehicle is at a standstill. I LR's newer mild-hybrid (MHEV) the engine cuts while the vehicle is still moving at a few MPH, relying on the MHEV battery to maintain systems until you're ready to pull away when the engine restarts.

I find it hard to believe that a manufacturer would include a system that was actively harmful to the vehicle; it's only enabled once the vehicle is up to temperature, so it's not like you're doing lots of cold-starts where the oil has drained away from vital components.

Warm or hot oil is less viscous than cold oil & drains away quicker than cold oil. Exclamation

Start stop system

For me the start stop system may save a few ltr of diesel which will save a few pounds but depending on how many times it has to cut in/out will cause much more wear on the starter motor which will cost you a lot of money along with your vehicle is off the road whilst the starter is exchanged so will also cost the money to rent a replacment vehicle whilst I do not have the price of replacing the starter I expect it to be several hundred pounds add that to the cost of renting anouther Landrover I doubt you will get much left from £1000 or more.

My daughters starter motor packed up and it was over £800 quid to replace it!

The turbo spooling up every time it stops is not good for the bearings in there. The oil can urn to varnish if it gets too hot and that's not good.

Stop start technology was developed for emissions and all manufacturers had to conform, whether good or bad for the engine.

I had the same problem in my facelift MY14 D4.

Ordered battery for under £40 from the link below and fitted myself in about an hour last week. Pretty easy job and would be much quicker if I had to do it again.

Start Stop is now working again. I reset the BMS using my IID tool - took me a while to find it in all the menus, it's in the BODY CONTROL section and there are separate option to reset for main battery or secondary battery.
