Hi people
Sorry this is odd I have never heard a noise like this come from a car. It sound like a grinding / cracking/ rattling noise and has happened twice today then just stopped again. It sounds like it comes from under the footwell or bottom of engine bay defiantly front end and doesn’t change tone or anything with braking or gear change but does go quiet the slower you go but no difference with revs. Any advice appreciated as I have had a dodgy garage have 3 attempts to replace the handbrake modul and wandering if they have @@@@@@ up something else now
Thankyou

Hi James, From your description it sounds like you need to get the car on a lift and have a look underneath. First check for anything loose. You will probably have to take the under shield protection off to look at the drive train. Check wheel bearings, front Diff and drive shafts (is anything hot?). You say you have had the handbrake looked at. Its possible the shoes have not been adjusted correctly. If brakes binding at the rear the noise can travel down the drive train. I would not drive the vehicle until you find out whats happening. Mileage and IID tool are useful pointers for fault identification, is it manual or Auto.

Could be front diff bearings starting to go..??
Mine sounded similar for a bit but soon degraded to a whine and rumble! If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....
Please note...

But then I could be talking .. O

I had a handbrake module replaced by a dealer. When I got the car back it developed a scraping grinding noise that sounded like it was coming from around the gearstick area.
Part of the handbrake module is the emergency brake release cable which runs along the drive tunnel to the gearstick area, it wasn't clipped in place properly and was hanging down and rubbing on the prop shaft. 07 Freelander 2 SE Loire Blue (Gone)
