Bad Vibrations

I was driving up the motorway this morning doing a steady 80 ish when suddenly the whole car started vibrating, almost like the balancing weights had come off the tyres or I had a puncture

I slowed to 60 but it was still there and there was a lot of steering wheel wobble. accelerated to 70 and still there. Then slowed to 50 and it was still vibrating. I was about to pull onto the hard sholder when I saw the 1 mile marker for the junction so thought i'd carry on. still doing 50mph when i got to the 300 yard marker the vibration suddenly stopped. Confused

I had a similar problem a couple of months ago. That time I pulled onto the hard shoulder and the vibration contimued until I stopped. I checked the tyres and carried on and hadnt had the problem again until now.

all the wheel nuts are at the correct Nm and the wheel weights still intact.

any ideas, its all a bit wierd Confused It definatly feals like wheels/steering etc rather than transmission/suspension

possibly. it just seems odd that ive had these wheels (17inch) on for 100k miles and its just these last couple of instances in the last month or so - just a coincidence perhaps.

Could it have possibly been the EPB binding on?

Debris sounds possible, but usually its bits of mud clinging to the wheels when you've come directly from a track onto the motorway....

I thought this was synonymous with either EPB delaminating and binding up in the drum or a stuck brake pad (caliper) ? Didn't you have one caliper replaced a few K ago Dunc?

I would also go with the epb theory, It happened to me a few times on the last D3. If it happens again, stop and feel the temperature of the rear wheels/hubs.

well... New EPB shoes etc arrived prompty from TLO Thumbs Up and Monday evening I set about fitting them.

I got the LHS wheel, pads, and disc off and guess what... the shoes where almost as good as the new ones I was going to fit. So I left them on, re-adjusted etc and moved on to the RHS. These were the same. By the time I was finished it was dark and left me feeling a bit peed off Confused

anyway today I noticed a squeeling from the RHS when braking. I'd only gone a put one of the pads on the wrongway round in the dark Thud . So ive had the metal back of a pad rubbing on the disk for about 300 miles Big Cry

The new discs the dealer fitted under warranty a few months ago is now well and truly scored Evil or Very Mad

Just finished fitting the Pad properly... in torential rain...

Hopefully the pads and disc will be OK until i get back from holiday - ive got a spare set of pads to take with me anyway..

So moral of the story is :- dont fit pads in the dark and pay attention to what you are doing...

AND, i still havent resolved the vibrations.. ive not had it again since the time mentioed earlier - just wondering now whether it could be the dampers sticking...

I have the same shuddering, vibrating, it's very intermittent but when it starts it's worrying. Had it ever since wheelbearing/stub axle unit changed on nearside. brakes checked seem fine, track rod ends replaced, suspension bushes currently being replaced but so far can find no explanation for it.

Embarassed should have updated this Rolling Eyes

the new pads and discs got ride of the vibration. Ive not had it since Thumbs Up of course it could have been that the shoes just needed re adjusting -

first try would be to clean epb and reset Thumbs Up
