Bad Vibrations - possibly on drive line

Hi all,

Started getting an intermittent vibration on somewhere on the driveline (I think). Was driving on the motorway when out of nowhere came a massive vibration, as if a tyre was totally out of balance or something. I instinctively slowed down a bit and the vibration stopped. When I resumed motorway speed, the vibration was gone, and never came back the rest of the journey.

This has happened 3 times now in total, with no specific time that it happens. I cannot replicate it, it seems random. It happened last night, but this time it came as I was cornering on a Welsh A road (would not even be classified as B road in England!) and this time as it started, it came with a bit of a clunk, which felt like the diff had jammed momentarily or something. It definately caused the car to be a little nervous though, as car twitched a bit on the bend and the DSC kicked in and brought the car back inline. Again, I slowed down a little and the vibration stopped, and has been fine since then.

I just don't have a clue. Is there likely to be a diff issue? Drive shafts? Hubs? I'm sure it cannot be the wheels/tyres, as except for these brief interludes, the car runs fine all the way through the speed range. If a wheel was out of balance, I would get it averytime I reach the resonant speed, rather than it being intermittent.

Any ideas you wonderful experts?

I would put money on a sticking, or delaminating park brake shoe in one of the rear wheels.

Are either of the rear wheels getting hot? is there excessive brake dust around one of the rear wheels. Next time it happens, stop and check if either rear disk is very hot.

Hmmm. I hadn't considered the park brake at all Gareth. I do have one rear wheel that seems to be rather smelly after a long drive. I changed the pads a couple of thousand miles ago, and the caliper etc all seemed to be fine, so I was wondering what was causing the smell. Hadn't considered the brake shoes.

When you say delaminating, I presume you mean the friction surface has come off the shoe, and maybe this is rotating in the drum and causing the vibration maybe? Can't think how else the vibration would be caused.

I also have had vibration caused by a delaminating park brake shoe (perhaps had not been adjusted correctly) The vibration only lasting for a short period and then disappearing.

However, this eventally led to brake material breaking off the shoe. What then happened was that all of a sudden one of the rear wheels would effectively lock up causing the vehicle to pull violently to the one side (due I believe to the loose brake material jamming between the shoe and the drum). On stopping the vehicle (there was no other option) what I then found was that if I reversed the vehicle I could clear the problem, only to have it come back after a short distance. Fortunately the fault only occured when I was travelling at 30 MPH. I dread to think what would have been the consequences if it had occured at motorway speeds. Anyway I refused to drive the vehicle as it was not safe and got Land Rover Assistance to recover the vehicle.

RJ, yes the friction material breaks up and detaches from the brake shoe. This could cause the wheel to jam. It is probably excess heat from a sticking shoe that causes it to delaminate.

I would look at it as soon as possible, because there are a few horror stories about regarding this problem.

I will order some shoes, and get the drum off asap. I did inspect them the last two times I changed the pads, and they looked fine, but I guess anything can happen since then.

Thanks for your advice Gareth, and for your horror story Zig. I hope the probelm is as simple as that. I'll let you know what I find when I've opened her up.

I just looked at the price of parking brake shoes! OUCH !!! I never realised they would be over 50 quid PER SIDE !! I've never known brake shoes to be sold other than in axle sets, and usually for less than £50 for the axle set.

I bought pattern (EBC) discs and pads from Paddocks every time I needed them, and they are cheaper than LR (and stacks better, EBC Green Stuff, and Drilled & Grooved discs), but they don't do the park brake shoes.

Anyone know where I can get some pattern shoes at a fairer price?

I spoke to Nick today on another matter (ordered myself some of the new style cup holders!) and he told me that the handbrake shoes were about £52 per set and you need 2 sets to do both sides! Doubtless there will be vat on top too.

I had hoped that there would be some pattern parts available though. The disc pads are available now in a number of different brands.

Got some shoes from Swansea 4x4 this morning and made a start on the job. Found one shoe to be entirely delaminated, exactly as you suggested Gareth. I didn't find any material inside the drum, bus I guess that had powdered and gone. It certainly does explain the symptoms I was getting, so I'm glad it was this simple and not somewhere else in the drive line, like the diff for example.

Only problem was that I found that my almost new EBC drilled and grooved disc/drum had two large cracks in it. I have to wonder if this is caused by the same heat that caused the shoe to delaminate although I also can't help thinking it could be defective, given that the new discs had only gone through one set of pads since new.
