Battery Earth Slave Point ?
I am in the process of adding an Anderson Cable connector for jump strarting to the front of my D4, And was wondering if anyone knows the correct negative position to slave start a D4 using jump cables ?
Not that i need a jump
On reading the handbook and it states not to use the negative post on the battery but to use a suitable earthpoint at least 0.5m away from the battery !
I have just had a look and except for the two tiny earth posts on the inner wing near the battery box there are none i can find !!!
( should these be used ??)
And there is no way you can get any jump cables in any of the small crevises to reach a meaty enough part on the engine.
Surely this is a design fault why LR have no designated negative point for booster starting.
On most new cars today there is nomally a sticker or an earth sign indicating such a point!! And to prevent injury, or damage to the car LR should indicate the point more clearly in their literature, otherwise Joe public will have no alternative but to use the negative post on the battery which states clearly in the literature should not be done.
Your points on this matter will be gratefully received.
Cheers

Yes Dunc but how are you supposed to get a set of jump cables in there you would struggle to get a spanner in and the handbook says 0.5 metres
I cant find any point 0.5 metres away ?
I am used to HGV's and so like thing meaty and fit for purpose ! ( and identified as the correct place for the correct job)
Perhaps i am missing the earth point and am looking to hard MY18 D5 HSE LUX😎

On the FF/L322 there is a specific point on the Pass Side suspension turret to attach a clamp to. Is this not somewhere that could be used on a disco?
Just a big bolt on something attached to the bodywork should do I'd guess.FFRR Owner, very nearly became a D3 owner

why dont you run a +ve and a -Ve cable to an anderson connector - then attach an anderson connector to the end of the jump leads. ive done this with a 170amp connector and works great - I know everyone says the jump cable shouldnt be connected to the battery, but that seems the only safe p[lace to attach it or risk the clips slipping off the earth points and sending sparks everywhere.Duncan

Yes Dunc thats what i am going to do, and leave the Andersons cable pemanently connected to the battery for ease of access with a dust cover on the connector positioned inside the front grill.
I have done this with the trucks at work but that is because to remove the battery covers on a Scania is a pain in the
Reading the LR handbook and trying to find the correct earth point is equally a pain in the
And so the only solution which we all use is to slave directly from the battery as there is no accessible point suitable for the purpose. MY18 D5 HSE LUX😎

there is also an earth point on the Front left wheel arch - under the battery box - you need to remove the wheel arch liner to get to it
ive got my rear anderson connected to a +ve from the battery with a 250amp mega fuse attached, and the -ve attached to the wheel arch earth point.Duncan

Thanks Dunc think i'll use the existing earth point the battery uses and run a cable down to the front, rather than remove the inner wheel arch MY18 D5 HSE LUX😎

The reason behind the warning to not use the battery -ve post with jump leads is of course to shift the point where there is a potential for a spark away from the possible gasses from the battery.
No problem with taking a permanently fitted cable down to an Anderson connector - when you use it to start your own vehicle the potential for spark will be wherever is last to be connected - the Anderson connector or the jump leads onto the donor battery.A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. Never read this bit of the manual. Jumped a tractor straight off the battery this morning, just doing what I've done with all previous vehicles.11 RR 4.4 TDV8

I have fitted 175 andersons stright to the spare tapped holes on the post clamp for the positive, and the negative used the post clamp stud itself. you should never have an issue with sparks as the lugs will be tight. used 35mm2 cable tri rated and double insulated. always switch headlights on fog lights heated seats etc etc so the alternator is under load and charging and you will prevent any volt spikes to up the ecu on the d4. jump started many generators after muppets have left dc on or: run generators out of fuel and flatened batteries trying to start them again
