get the alternator replaced asap, when it fails the disco will stop very quickly as it uses such a lot of power to keep going.

Get the battery and alternator tested. The D3 is very sensitive to voltage shortages.

I just had the battery light on my lr3 come on. I had the alternator rebuilt. $90 with a 5 year warranty. Dealer wanted $1000 for a new one. Not a bad job to remove and replace. Make sure that the positive cable is pointing to the rear of the vehicle when you reattach it. Good luck. Phil

many thanks, it seems a straight forward job to replace, and the denso one on ebay is available for a reasonable price.

Whatever you do, do it quickly! I had 20 minutes between the battery light coming on, and the alternator frying. Luckily I’d driven it straight to the garage. Lots of blue smoke and a smell I care not to smell again!

Easy enough to change, I did mine on a campsite in Devon once.

The biggest issue is removing the viscous fan.

In theory you need a big fan spanner(halfords) but remember it's a Left Hand thread, and a special tool to hold the body, but I managed to do it with a length of angle borrowed from the site owner.

the Alternator itself is a skinned knuckles job but easy enough once that Fan is out of the way.
